SWSA: Mission Statement

The mission of the Salisbury Winter Sports Association is to acquaint our nearby
communities, especially the children, with Nordic ski-jumping, cross-country
and Alpine skiing, and to teach the skills necessary for their enjoyment and
lifelong pursuit. As part of its mission, SWSA hosts and perpetuates the
annual ski-jumping competition on Satre Hill to sustain ski jumping
in Salisbury and the Eastern United States.

“It Takes a Village.” I liked the phrase, but the
book ruined it for me. Everywhere I turned, for
years after the publication, someone was talk-

Then I moved to Salisbury, a village if ever

jumps. I knew a little about jumping from help-

Team SWSA 2020: Junior Jumping at Satre Hill By Ariel Picton Kobayashi
With the start of a new decade, I am lucky to again
be coaching a great group of new and returning ski
jumpers this year. Due to increased outreach to local
schools, the construction of a new in-run on our 20
meter jump and the addition of steel tracks, and the
engaged and energetic new and returning ski jumpers
to Team SWSA, the 2020 winter season is proving to
be one of the most exciting of my four winters spent as
a ski jumping coach!
At the end of the 2019 season the SWSA Board
of Directors decided to make some changes to our
smallest jump. The 20 meter hill, all the way to the left
as you look at the jumps, is used the most out of all
of our jumps. I would argue it is the most important
jump here at SWSA! Throughout the winter we hold
practices several nights a week on the 20 meter hill; it
is where the spark for ski jumping begins in a young
jumper.
Due to unpredictable weather and multiple thaws
each winter, it has been difficult to maintain a base of
snow on the in-run of the jump. During this past off-
season SWSA built a new in-run on the 20 meter jump
in order to install steel tracks for skiers to ski down. PHOTO BY CAROLINE GILBERT
These steel tracks guide the skis down the in-run to
the takeoff. The advantage of the new tracks is that
they can be used without snow! This improves the Throughout December, I spoke to local elemen- jumper starts small and works their way up to larger

the amazing amount of volunteer hours put in by the

I say all this under no false pretenses, and my
glasses are not rose tinted. I have traveled to every club
in America, and I don’t believe anyone understands
more than I the tightrope act our clubs walk every day
to try to keep the lights on and the jumps open. I see
the similarities in the challenges that USA Nordic and
Salisbury both face. I am not going to pretend that the
pathway forward is easy, but just like the decision to
rebuild Satre Hill meant Jumpfest would continue into
its 94th year, the formation of USA Nordic has led to
more athletes across the country than we have had in
the last 10 years, and each year the numbers tick up.
Neither USA Nordic nor SWSA have the perfect for-
mula. The growth of athletes is not as fast as I would
like, and I am sure there are tons of improvements and
upgrades that SWSA wants to do, but it is far better
to be talking about slow growth and limited improve-
ments then declining athletes and rotting structures. I
will acknowledge that some of our clubs are declining,
but as a country we are moving forward, and forward
is better than backward. As long as the volunteers at
