town’s ski jump, a project they began after leasing the
jump site for a $1.00 per year. When construction was
completed in 1950, the reconfigured 60-meter jumping
hill was site for the U.S. Eastern Ski Jumping Champion-
ship with a field of regional skiers was the world-cham-
pion Norwegian team, the Canadian team, and several of
the top-ranked stars in the U.S. Nowhere in the world on
the weekend of January 8, 1950 was there a more talented
collection of ski jumpers than in Salisbury.
S.W.S.A was rewarded for its commitment to the event
in 1950 with record-breaking crowds and record-breaking
jumps. 10,000 spectators crammed into Satre Hill, filling
the viewing area; it remains the largest crowd in Salisbury
ski jumping history. The audience witnessed the first ever
200-foot jump at Satre Hill by Norwegian Arnfinn Berg-
mann, a future gold-medalist at the 1952 Olympics.
***
Indian Mountain School In 1952 Salisbury hosted the National Ski Jump-
ing Championships. Once again, the spectators came
in waves. Among the jumpers to dazzle the crowd was
Roy Sherwood, a Salisbury boy. He learned to ski on
the rocky slopes of northwestern Connecticut and
through S.W.S.A, guided by former star, Ottar Satre.
Roy was part of that first generation of S.W.S.A skiers,
and remains its most distinguished alumnus.
“Roy’s love of the sport, his determination and
spark identified him as the one who would go far-
thest,” his friend John Pepper once told the Waterbury
Sunday Republican. In 1953, Roy set a world ski-flying
record in Austria and won the National Ski Association
championship. He realized his ultimate goal in 1956
representing the United States at the Olympic games in
Cortina, Italy.
Roy was the closest thing to a skiing superhero that
Salisbury has ever produced. “Roy is one of the super-
man type who flies through the air with the ease of
that TV character,” wrote John DiCorpo in the Sunday
Republican in March 1955.
***
Of all the volunteer efforts none are more back-
breaking than preparing Satre Hill for competition.
Snow is an unsure proposition, staging the ski jumps
is a product of improvisation and honest labor. Things
have grown easier in recent years with the introduc-
tion of snowmaking and electricity at Satre Hill – that’s
“easier,” not, “easy”.
Before 1990, without snowmaking, S.W.S.A volun-
teers were left to their imagination when the weather
didn’t cooperate. Instead of waiting on snow to fall,
they clambered into their pickup trucks and hunted it
down. (“We’ve got a great team of scroungers,” long-
time volunteer Bill Appleyard liked to say.) Alongside
town roads and highways was always the best place
Friday, February 12, 2pm - 5pm excluding the actual gathering of snow, took at least
three days of labor on the part of 15-20 volunteers.
“It was all grunt work,” said Kiefer. “There weren’t any
Saturday, February 13, 10am - 2pm shortcuts.”
Stories abound of overcoming the weather to ready
Satre Hill for competition, and they all speak to the
same themes: dedication to a common cause and
resourcefulness.
As Art Tokle Jr. wrote in a 2001 retrospective, “This
is the community where residents and members of
S.W.S.A give of themselves so that a few ski jumpers

✒ SWSA Ski Jumpers: One Family’s Experience
Ethan Gardner (age 12) and received training from experienced ski jumpers. am always waiting for the next jump, the next adrenaline
Ski jumping is one of the best sports; it brings up many I am very thankful to SWSA for sponsoring me and to rush. I love every minute of it, everyone in the ski jump-
opportunities. One of the opportunities that I was excited all the volunteers that make this ski jumping adventure ing community is always cheering everyone on, support-

mer I met many different Olympians from various sports I became more serious about ski jumping last winter. I times I was there I had a great time meeting Olympians,
getting coached by accomplished ski jumpers and meeting
other jumpers. In addition to that, I made great progress
both times.
"Stick with it, you'll be over there in a few weeks." said
coach Mark to me as he pointed to the 30 meter jump. I
had just switched to jumping skis and without grooves in
the 20 meter track for my skis to ride in, I was not even
concerned with how I jumped, I was just happy to make it
down the in-run without falling. Sure enough only a few
weeks later I jumped off the 30.
I am very thankful for the continuous support of
SWSA and all of the volunteers that make it all happen. I
am also very lucky to have Mark as my coach because he
is very supportive and encouraging, and puts a lot of his
own time into coaching us and even traveling to see us at
away jumps. I am very excited to see the Junior Nationals
in Salisbury this winter. If ski jumping at all intrigues you,
it is amazing to watch.

Summer Jump Camp in Lake Placid, NY
A Parent Perspective:
Greg and Amy Gardner
Seth and Ethan participated in the Christmas
jump camp for several years and last year they
became more committed to ski jumping. The ski
jumping community has been very welcoming to
new jumpers. While ski jumping is an individual
sport the other jumpers (and their parents) cheer
for all the other jumpers. Seth and Ethan have
had the opportunity to train in Lake Placid and
stay at the Olympic Training Center where they
have formed friendships with many other Eastern Insurance, Finance, and Training for Exporters
jumpers and coaches. They have met many older
jumpers and keep up with them when they jump
at events across the country and across the world.
They know the older jumpers were yesterday's Carey D. Fiertz
young jumpers. President www.exportrisk.com
Ski jumping has provided lessons in focus, per-
sistence and confidence as they transitioned from
alpine skis, to jump skis and jumping increasingly
larger hills. These are all great lessons for life.
SWSA is incredibly supportive of young jump-
ers. The volunteers work relentlessly to ensure
the jump facility is ready for the jumpers. Coach

DISTANCE
An athlete’s jump is measured in distance and convert-
ed to points. An athlete receives 60 points if they reach the
K point. The K point refers to the section of the landing
hill where it starts to flatten out and is usually marked by
a red line. This indicates the hill size, for instance the K
point here on the large steel jump is 65. A jump to the K
point is worth 60 points; each meter over or under that
distance increases or decreases the score.
