Duralumin and Pewter: Composition and Uses

Duralumin is a light, ductile aluminum alloy composed of 95% aluminum, 4% copper, 0.5% manganese and 0.5% magnesium. It has good heat and electrical conductivity while being one third the density of steel, and can be strengthened to 2000 kg/cm2 through heat treatment without losing ductility. Duralumin is used in automotive and aircraft applications due to its combination of lightness and strength.

Duralumin

Composition: 95% Al, 4% Cu, 0.5% Mn and 05% Mg.

Properties:

a) It is a light, ductile and tough alloy

b) It has good conductivity of heat and electricity.
c) Through its strength is comparable to that of steel, its density is only one-third of steel
d) It is possesses good machinability
e) Its tensile strength can be increased to 2000 kg/cm2 by heat treatment without affecting its
ductility
f) Its corrosion resistance cane be improve by the process of cladding (one thin sheet of the
alloy is sandwiched between the two thin sheets of pure aluminium)

Uses:

a) Due to its lightness and strength it is used in automobile and aircraft industries in the
form of “Alclad” sheets. It is also used in locomotive parts
b) Due to its good electrical conductivity and high ductility, it is used in making surgical
instruments, cables, fluorescent tube caps, structural framework, hardware, body of
vehicles, rivets, bars, etc.

Pewter

Composition: 85-99% tin, 5-10% antimony, 2% copper, bismuth, and sometimes silver.

Properties:

It does not have a high, glossy finish, but rather, it has a satin finish

Uses:

Pewter is used in decorative objects, mainly collectible statuettes and figurines, game figures,
aircraft and other models, (replica ) coins, pendants, and plated jewelry.
