CHAPTER 2

THE BACKGROUND

Review of Related Literature

Mobile Legends is a 5v5 MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) for handheld devices

that offers a variety of playable heroes, game modes, and intense, fast-paced gameplay. With

controls optimized for touchscreen devices, players, can quickly get set up to play a match

against other players in real time.

According to Juventus Vox (2018), researchers came up with a study to show that there is

also an effect in mobile games, such as Mobile Legends, to the behavior and health of students.

Negative effects contain distraction while performing another important activity (procrastination,

abandonment of obligations, such as homework and studying), affecting social interaction (lack

of communication and cooperation or participation in group activities), sleep problems and loss

of productivity (losing energy and interest in class).

To prove that Mobile Legends can be a nuisance to the Grade 10-CSS 3 students, Janneth

Andes (2019) did her research and analyzed the bad effects of Mobile Legends. She learned that

Mobile Legends is one of the trending mobile games played all over the world, and everyone has

the tendency to be hooked in it, that would lead to game addiction. According to her study, some

of the negative effects of it, which is similar to online or internet addiction are: 1) Strong

emotional attachment to the game that they prioritize playing rather than studying, or doing

homework. 2) Changes in social interaction, which leads to them preferring to be alone and not

collaborate or cooperate with their classmates inside the classroom.

In US Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the term

‘pathological gaming’ or game addiction is being widely discussed in the medical circles though

it is not yet classified as any formal disorder. Pathological gamers are likely to develop anxiety,

insomnia, social isolation, and depression. Moreover, these factors are co-morbid in the sense

that they can influence each other. Therefore, pathological gaming can result in depression,

anxiety, or social phobia, and the latter three can make one of the students of Grade 10-CSS 3

more inclined and attracted to playing Mobile Legends instead of studying.

Based on studies, MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) has positive effects to a

person. However, using too much of this can cause a lot of problems to your health and even

relationships with other people.

According to Janell Obrero (2019), about two months before she found out, a guy died of

Stage 4 colon cancer. He posted his picture, so skinny and so pale. He said that because of the

time he spent in playing Mobile Legends, he often skipped meals and didn’t get enough sleep.

He chose to play than prioritize his health. This will result in absence in classes and failure of

academic performances.

Based on Joy’s recent studies (2019), because of playing Mobile Legends, it may affect

your personality, too. It can change your personality and attitude, how you respond or interact

with other people. There’s a possibility that you will be more aggressive and react madly at the

simplest situations. A comprehensive meta-analysis involving more than 100 research papers

have shown that exposure to violent mobile games is a causal risk factor for increased aggressive

behavior (2019).
This research is conducted to determine each of the negative side effects of the

international mobile game, Mobile Legends, hence, a set of rules regarding this online game can

be introduced to the Grade 10-CSS 3 students and to others, the negative effects of one of the

most trending mobile games in the world.
