SUBJECT : CALIBRATION OF MAGNETIC YOKES.
1.0 PURPOSE
1.1 To establish a standard procedure for calibration of magnetic yokes.
2.0 APPLICATION
2.1 All magnetic yokes used by field inspectors to conduct magnetic particle
testing .
2.2 This procedure applies to the initial calibration of newly aquired yokes and
to the periodic calibration at the specified intervals.
3.0 ASSOCIATED MATERIALS.
3.1 Ten { 10} pound weight
4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 Field inspectors shall calibrate their magnetic yokes at least once every 12
months as outlined in this procedure.
4.2 Visually examine the yoke for any defects which would affect accuracy
function or use.
4.3 Magnetic yokes shall have a dead weight lifting power of at least ten { 10 }
pounds.
4.4 Place the yoke on a ten pound weight of carbon or alloy steel so that the
poles of the yoke are flat on the surface of the weight.
4.5 Apply electric current to the yoke and lift the weight. Once the weight is
fully suspended , continue applying the current for five { 5} seconds.
4.6 Return the weight to it’s rest position and remove the electric current.
4.7 Repeat steps 4.4 , 4.5 and 4.6 two additional times.
4.8 Each time , the yoke must be able to lift the weight and keep it suspended
as long as the current is applied to the yoke.
4.9 If the yoke is unable to perform as outlined in this procedure it shall be
returned to inspection services for repair.
4.10 All repair work must be performed by a qualified individual.
