Five tips for delivering an effective oral
presentation.
1. Eye contact
Try not to read every word off your presentation, engage with your audience. Although it can be scary
to stand in front of your class and have everyone looking at you, just remember that everyone will be
in your position.
A solution to not reading everything from your presentation is to use cue cards. This way you do not
have to turn your back when reading slides or posters. Cue cards allow you to have the main ideas
right in front of you. Do not write everything down on the cards just the main points so you can
quickly glance at the information that will help you remember what to say.
2. Use your hands
Try not look like a statue. A good idea is to practise certain gestures for example, using your fingers
to count the different points you are making, this will help the audience follow what you are saying.
3. Speak clearly and vary your tone of voice
You need to speak in a clear and loud manner so everyone can hear you. Don’t forget to speak slowly
and to pronounce your words clearly by opening your mouth fully.
The tone of your voice is very helpful because it can give a ‘sing-song’ value making the speaker
more pleasant to pay attention to. By using indication (your voice rising or falling) expresses the
passion and energy you have for your chosen topic.
4. Engage with your audience
By engaging with your audience will not only boost your confidence but also make your presentation
more enjoyable
5. And lastly, remember to smile, breathe and have fun!
Don’t think you need to be smiling all throughout your presentation but by smiling at the start and end
of your presentation will make a difference.
If you get nervous when presenting, it is typical to rush through your work so you are finished quicker
but remember the faster you talk the more you will have to talk about. Talking in a slower pace will
allow you to speak clearly and breathe properly and will allow your audience to engage with the
information better.
