Role of Performance Appraisal in the changing work environment and its effect on the
performance of a company

Introdction

Performance Appraisal is know to be the method and system of evaluating if


organisational objectives are achieved. It would analyse how the performance of staff
and personnels have progress satisfy and meet the needs of the firm (Debrah et
al;2003) Performance Appraisal is most often understaken with the aim of improving
performance, motivating employees and/or allocating rewards. An honest and accurate
assessment of current performance can be a strong driver for future learning,
development and performance improvement. The process of performance feedback and
setting of improvement target can itself be a strong motivation (Loke& Latham 1990)
and for there to be equitable distribution of rewards some fair method of comparing
contribution between individual is require otherwise unfair system will fall into what
Herzberg termed ’hygine factor’ and be demotivator (Mullins 2005).

Mos of the organisation are satisfies with the appraisal process and they think that
appraisal process increases the overall performance of the organisation (Shah, 1995).
However appraisal system becomes failure if there is lack of support from management
or companies do not bother about the Performance Appraisal process.

Background and Problem Statement

The changing environment for organisation require new products and services, new
organisational structure and system, and hence new competencies and working
practices for employees. Increasing competition and ev er-greater demand from
customers, investors and government means ‘high performance’ and become a
requirement for organisational process success (Boxall & Purcell 2003). Against this
background of increasing change and higher performance, how can organisation ensure
that employees understand the part they play in achieving organisational objectives and
have the required skills, knowledge and attitude to do so? How can Appraisal play
important role in achieving companies outcomes.
Upon the implementation of Performance Appraisal, there are many recognizable
benefit. However it remains a question regarding the effectivness of the appraisal
system to imporve the employee performance and hence company performance.

This research aim to explore and analyse the role of Performance Appraisal in changing
work environment and how it effect the company performance.

Research Objectives

The goal of this project is to evaluate the role if Performance Appraisal with changing
working environment and evaluation its effectiveness on company performance.
Specially, this proposed study aims on achieving the following objectives:

1. Know the fundamental concept of Performance Appraisal system.

2. Identify the empolyee/employer perception about Performance Appraisal.

3. Detemine the different approaches used by companies for Performance Appraisal.

Research Questions

This dissertation seek to investigate and evaluate Performance Appraisal and its
effectiveness on company performance. Specially following questions shall be
answered:

1. How Performance Appraisal helps management in a company.

2. What is the perception of the employees or employer about Performance Appraisal


system.

3. Analysis the influences of Performance on company performance.


Research Methodology

Methodology play prominent role in doing any research work successfully. Methodology
means the methods used in doing the research. It provides the information by which the
validity and reliability of the research work is justified.

The proposed aim is investigating the importance of Performance Appraisal and its
effects on company performance. For this study only secondary data will be consider
which is taken form aticles, pervious research and internet.

Limitation to Research

This research report is based on literature review and its critical analysis on
Performance Appraisal. Since this study is based on secondary data so neither practical
work nor primary data has been collected. This all recommendations and conclusions
are based on analsis of the literature review.

Company Perfromance is not only based on Performance Appraisal system. There are
many other factors that contributed directly or indirectly on the successful of a company.
However Performance Appraisal improve the company performance.
