Flush your system with an enema, my daughter, said Gandhijee ... "Look at this girl," "said
Gandhijee, pointing to the skinny women who flank him. I give myself enemas, there is no
shame. They are like her mom, you can see how soft and moist her skin is by looking at her
bright eyes! "
Gandhijee advises Lenny to do an enema, "Rinse your stomach! Your skin will bloom like
roses." Here, the author has represented the character of Gandhijee speaking only of enema.
Gandhijee introduced by announcing: "One enema a day keeps the doctor away." The
narrator was shown by the author wondering in the following words: "I am amazed to see
why he is so famous".
Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, has acclaimed and worshiped not only in India but
around the world for his principles of non-violence and peace. But in the current novel, he
presented himself as a problematic politician. The masseuse says of him: "He is a politician,
yes, it is his business to adapt to his language so far." Lenny sees it as "an unlikely release
between a clown and a demon". And she doesn't know why she's famous.
Remember how he keeps talking about enema, personal hygiene and a slow stomach. In the
heated discussion between admirers of Ayah, the butcher grunted him as "this ferryman of
nonviolent violence: your precious Gandhiji". Lenny remembered him as a dark, wrinkled
little old man, as did his gardener, Hari.
Sidhwa seems to give his opinion on Gandhijee through the brief description of the character
of Gandhijee in the novel told by Lenny. In the novel, the author provides a description of the
event when Gandhijee arrives in Lahore, where the author focused more on Gandhijee's
advice on feeding and enema. Here, it seems that the author played the character of
Gandhijee by focusing on very few traits of his personality. Gandhijee was portrayed with
feminine features and the description sometimes seems to laugh at Gandhijee's personality
and character. When Gandhijee visits Lahore, Lenny and his mother meet Gandhijee. He
knits surrounded by women. When Lenny and her mother go to Gandhijee, she politely puts
aside her handkerchiefs and kindly asks to perform an enema, a medical means of cleaning
the intestines.
