Practice 1

Commercial 1: The Subaru Poodle Commercial

1. What is the main claim of the advertisement? (Hint: for most
advertisements, the main claim is that you should buy something.)
 The claim of the advertisement is to persuade you to buy a vehicle made by
Subaru.
2. Does the advertisement provide any reasons for the claim?
 An indirect claim that could provide reasons to purchase a vehicle from Subaru
would be that the cars are made for families which is portrayed by a family of
dogs in the cars representing an actual human family.
3. Does the advertisement provide any evidence? For instance, are there
any facts, statistics, experts (doctors, scientists, government officials), or
anecdotes (first hand experiences) to support the claim? If so, list them and be
specific.
 Commercial 1 does not necessarily provide any evidence as all they are filled
with dogs and not any humans and or written statistics.
4. What types of appeals does the advertisement use? Pathos (causing an
emotional reaction), Ethos (showing its sources for information, acknowledging
alternative viewpoints, and providing credible testimony), or Logos (providing
clear reasons and evidence, appealing to the viewers intellect or rational mind)
 Commercial 1 uses the appeal of Pathos as the advertisement is filled with
puppies which most people have a positive emotional reaction to.
5. Based on your answers, who is the audience for this advertisement?
Some things to consider when thinking about audience appeal are the
following. Note: not all of these are always relevant, and there may be other
relevant conditions that are not listed. For instance, some ads may have
nothing to do with one's religion, but it is still important to consider these
conditions to begin thinking about the target audience.
 Based on my answers the audience for commercial 1 is the typical suburban
family with multiple kids and most likely in the middle and upper-economic
class.

Commercial 2: The Ford Ranger - Science of Truck
1. What is the main claim of the advertisement? (Hint: for most
advertisements, the main claim is that you should buy something.)
 The main claim of this argument is to buy the Ford Ranger truck.
2. Does the advertisement provide any reasons for the claim?
 Yes, the advertisement focuses on a specific truck (the Ford Ranger) and its
heavy-duty capabilities.
3. Does the advertisement provide any evidence? For instance, are there
any facts, statistics, experts (doctors, scientists, government officials), or
anecdotes (first hand experiences) to support the claim? If so, list them and be
specific.
 The advertisement provides a lot of evidence that supports the claim. For
example, most of the commercial shows the capabilities of the truck as its
pulling large objects up steep cliffs. Another example would be what Ford calls
“the science of truck” where a group of Ford engineers put the Ford Ranger
through multiple experiments to test the truck’s physical capabilities.
4. What types of appeals does the advertisement use? Pathos (causing an
emotional reaction), Ethos (showing its sources for information, acknowledging
alternative viewpoints, and providing credible testimony), or Logos (providing
clear reasons and evidence, appealing to the viewers intellect or rational mind).
 Commercial 2 used the appeal of Logos as the advertisement provided
organized and straight forward information about the product (the Ford Ranger)
and its capabilities while providing visual evidence to support the claim.
 Based on my answers, the audience of this advertisement is a hard-working
male who works in the outdoors where heavy and powerful tools may be
required. Also, the advertisement could be targeted towards middle and upper-
class individuals as the trucks are clearly expensive and are more powerful
than normal pickup trucks.

Commercial 3: Audi Welcomes Women to the Driver's Seat
1. What is the main claim of the advertisement? (Hint: for most
advertisements, the main claim is that you should buy something.)
 The main claim of the advertisement is to buy and drive an Audi. In further
detail, the advertisement is targeted more towards Sadia Arabian woman.
2. Does the advertisement provide any reasons for the claim?
 Yes, the advertisement starts as a woman and a man walk out to their Audi
and she opens the door for him, and she then dramatically gets into the
driver’s seat and starts to drive off with a smile on her face.
3. Does the advertisement provide any evidence? For instance, are there
any facts, statistics, experts (doctors, scientists, government officials), or
anecdotes (first hand experiences) to support the claim? If so, list them and be
specific.
 Yes, the advertisement does provide evidence. After the advertisement is
completed; visual evidence appears in the advertisement stating, “Audi
welcomes the woman of Saudi Arabia to the driver’s seat.”
Commercial 3 used the appeal of Pathos to an extend because Audi shows its
support and excitement towards Saudi Arabian women finally being allowed to
legally drive.
 Based on my answers, the audience for this advertisement is Sadia Arabian
woman and the public as a whole. The advertisement directly mentions whom
they are targeting this advertisement too, but the advertisement also addresses
the whole public to inform all of the change taking place is Sadia Arabia.

Practice 2

(2003):  "Where is the Love" by the Black Eyed Peas

1. What story is being told in the video? Who are the main characters?
 The story being told in this video is that there is only “one world” and that we
should be spreading love and not hate. The main characters of this video are
the singers in The Black Eyed Peas. The video also includes children and
ordinary people.
2. What is the main claim of the music video? In other words, what does the
story being told lead the viewer to believe?
 The main claim of the music video is that love is important that more of it
needs to be expressed throughout the world.
3. Does the video provide any reasons for the claim? Be specific.
 Yes, the video does provide reasons for the claim. For example, the lead
singer of The Black Eyed Peas sings a verse that expresses how the lack of
love leads to discrimination and racism.  Another example would be the
symbolic meaning of the question mark being placed everywhere throughout
the video. This question mark represents the question “where is the love,”
4. Does the video provide any evidence? For instance, are there any facts,
statistics, experts (doctors, scientists, government officials), or anecdotes
(first-hand experiences) to support the claim? If so, list them and be specific.
 The video doesn’t necessarily provide any factorial or statistical evidence to
support the claim, but the video does show people coming together at the end.
5. What types of appeals does the video use? Pathos (causing an emotional
reaction), Ethos (showing its sources for information, acknowledging other
viewpoints, and providing credible testimony), or Logos (providing clear
reasons and evidence, appealing to the viewers intellect or rational mind).
 The music video uses the appeal of Pathos as the lyrics and the visuals in the
video express love and kindness amongst all people.
6. Based on your answers, who is the audience for this advertisement?
Some things to consider when thinking about audience appeal are the
following. (Note: not all of these are always relevant, and there may be other
relevant conditions that are not listed.  For instance, some ads may have
nothing to do with one's religion.)
 Based on my answers the audience of this video is everyone. The audience
being targeted are people of different backgrounds regardless of race, sex,
and profession.

(2016): "Where is the Love" by the Black Eyed Peas.
1. What story is being told in the video? Who are the main characters?
 The story being told in this video is how there is no more love between people
of all countries, races, and regions as well as the effects of each. The main
characters consist of well-known musical artists like The Black Eyed Peas,
Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, Jamie Fox, Cassie, and ordinary people.
2. What is the main claim of the music video? In other words, what does the
story being told lead the viewer to believe?
 The main claim of the music video is to inform people that there is no more
love in the world and that there should be.
3. Does the video provide any reasons for the claim? Be specific.
 Yes, the video does provide reasons that support this claim. For example, the
video show multiple images of the effects of hate like black lives matter riots
and the wars in the Middle East. The video also includes verses of many artists
that hit on different topics like police shootings, the war against terrorism, and
discrimination.
4. Does the video provide any evidence? For instance, are there any facts,
statistics, experts (doctors, scientists, government officials), or anecdotes (first
hand experiences) to support the claim? If so, list them and be specific.
 Yes, the advertisement does provide evidence to support the claim. For
example, the video includes all kinds of people like celebrities, parents,
children, and average individuals. Another example are the visual aspects of
the video mentioned in question three.
5. What types of appeals does the video use? Pathos (causing an emotional
reaction), Ethos (showing its sources for information, acknowledging other
viewpoints, and providing credible testimony), or Logos (providing clear
reasons and evidence, appealing to the viewers intellect or rational mind).
 The video uses the appeal of Pathos heavily as the whole point of the video is
to show people the terrible effected of hate and what it does to all people all
around the world.
6. Based on your answers, who is the audience for this advertisement?
Some things to consider when thinking about audience appeal are the
following. (Note: not all of these are always relevant, and there may be other
relevant conditions that are not listed.  For instance, some ads may have
nothing to do with one's religion.)
 Based on my answers, the audience of the video is everyone. The video is
targeted towards people of all genders, races, economic status, nationality,
etc.
7. Based on the answers to your questions, what would you say is the
relationship between the versions?  Are the claims the same or different for
each version? Explain your answer. Does one more effectively get the message
across? If so, why? Do the two versions appeal to different audiences? If so,
describe those differences? How does each version appeal to that specific
audience? Are the purposes the same? If so, why did the artists make two
versions?
 The relationship between the two versions is to spread love and not hate. The
claims between the two versions are the same. Although they are noticeable
different, they both want to spread the message of love. The second version
does get the message across slightly better because it shows more the
negative effects of hate why we should all love instead. The two versions
appeal to different audiences. The first version is targeted towards everyone as
a whole community and the second one is targeted towards the younger
generation as the video includes relevant artists in today’s music industry. The
purposes are the same, but I believe the artist made two visions for a certain
reason. The first version was sort of a PSA and an inspirational message. The
second version was more serious and provided negative visuals and lyrics to
truly implement change in the world.
