2. History about the Carmenére in Chile: how it was discovered? Who?
Carménère has been cultivated in Chile since 1850. In Chile, the sensitivity of the vine to the
cool European weather is not important. The thermometer rarely falls below 10°C on summer
nights. Since Carménère and Merlot vines are very similar in appearance, vines imported from
France were usually planted in Chile in "mixed stands". Because the grape variety almost
completely disappeared in France due to the phylloxera plague, the name Carménère fell into
oblivion at the beginning of the 20th century. From then on, the Chilean vines were considered
a variant of Merlot because of their similarity. However, no one could explain the clear
difference in taste between Merlot wines from Chile and those from other countries.
The French ampelographer Jean-Michel Boursiquot was able to eliminate this mistake
definitively in 1994 by DNA analysis. The first pure Carménère wine was produced by the
Chilean winery "Carmen" only in 1996, my year of birth.
