Suprise - One Act Play

The one-act play "Surprise" tells the story of Peter and his girlfriend who have been dating for three weeks. Peter has psychic powers that allow him to predict what people will say, which his girlfriend hates because he always interrupts her. Due to this problem, his girlfriend breaks up with him at the end of the play, despite Peter knowing it would happen. Devastated, Peter is surprised when the waitress kisses him and says "Surprise!". The play uses minimal props and lighting to focus attention on the conversation between characters and convey their personalities. While the acting of some characters is overdramatic at times, the overall setting is effective at delivering the comedic story and message that relationships require sacrifice and understanding

Surprise - One Act Play

The one act play is named "Surprise", which is created by Mark Harvey Levine. The play talked
about Peter and her girlfriend who have been in a relationship for three weeks and a waitress in a
restaurant. However Peter's relationship with his girlfriend is severing. Peter have psychic powers
wherein he can see what would happen in the future. However, since Peter can see the future, he
can predict what other people will say which his girlfriend really hate because she could never finish
a sentence because Peter always interrupt her. Due to this problem and situation, his girlfriend
dumped him in the end,,despite the fact he know that it will happen to him, leaving him and a female
waiter. Utterly desperate of his girlfriend dumping him, he was shocked when the waitress kissed
him, giving a "SURPRISE!"

The director and/ or the designer of the play seek to find a comedic yet deep play, which they
outstandingly achieved from the play. The scene with only a single table and two chairs and a black
background gave the depth and focus of the audience to the conservation of the two actors on
stage. Additional light that is reflected on the top of the couple and the table also gave depth and
focus for the audience. Sound effects and costumes of the actor make the setting perfect for the
play, most especially the costume of the two actors which tells that they are in a date setting even
though neither of the actors told is a date. Finally the expression and actions of each character gave
the depth of personality of each character like the shaking moving of the waitress which prepares the
audience for the ending although it was too much and the reaction of the lady for every time Peter
would finish a sentence although it was too much overreacting because a lady can be angry but not
as overreacting as the actress did. Like I said, the purpose of all the different costumes, decoration
and others for the play is that to give focus to the conversation and give more personality to the
characters despite being comedic all the time. In this way, they make the audience feel the depth of
each and every character.

Effectiveness of the play is outstanding, achieving every goal and lesson that they want to achieve
and show to the audience. Showing that love needs sacrifice and consideration no matter how
annoying or irritating you can be to each other. Although their acting is a little bit over because the
over excessive movement of the waitress and the overreaction of the lady may be unnecessary for
other people in the audience. Although despite the other problem, the setting of the play is spot on
and delivers focus to the actors on stage. And with all of the things I have said, I can say that the
play has effectively achieved its purpose.
