Dear Mrs. Davis,
The collection of writings I have proposed over the time I have been in school has
improved tremendously in a multitude of ways. The most common jobs in today’s society are
correlated with professional business letters or public opinions someone may have. Developing
good writing habits at a young age is crucial in everyday tasks. Writing has helped me develop
communication skills for real life circumstances as well as helping me improve my grammar,
formatting, and most importantly the confidence I have as a person and a writer. My portfolio has
made me understand the potential I have not only as a writer but also as a film producer.
Through all of my pieces of work I can see how much I have developed in my
communication skills, whether it be how I come across or how I am able to communicate with
different age groups. When I first started writing I knew in my mind I had high potential but
lacked something. I realized that in today's society that communication is lacking all the way
around because the improvement of technology has allowed our society to depend on electronic
communication rather than face to face interaction.
My first piece of writing portrays my starting point as a writer and displays room for
improvement. As I have completed more writings I have been shaped to construct more literate
and professional artifacts. Various tools have benefitted me in the development of my writing
skills. For example, in my first piece I wrote over a government debate, I lacked the ability to
elaborate and explain my view in a complex manner. I was very vague, brief, and straight
forward. Because of this, I was unable to reach my full potential when writing this essay. My
second writing explains my sense of purpose that developed because of a hazing experience that
took place during my freshman year of highschool. This specific event caused me to form my
core values; loyalty, ownership, and purpose. With the expansion of these ideals, I was able to
overcome things that had previously influenced me in a negative aspect.
Since then, my skills as a writer have developed tremendously. In reference to this, my
best piece is a letter I wrote to a local attorney regarding the bias of congressional judges in
relation to race and ethnicity. This opportunity allowed me to dive deep into the biases of the
United States Congressional Judges as well as that of the common public. Within this paper, I
acknowledged many different subjects like the committee in charge of sentencing as well as
those who are in prominent positions at regional levels. In modern society, there are very strong
and common biases that are often unconscious to the general citizen. I also acquired a lot of
information regarding the court system and how those of a low socioeconomic status are treated
unfairly compared to those who are members of a higher socioeconomic status.
Throughout my development as a writer, my process has developed from googling a topic
to conducting in depth research about the subject that has been presented to me. My general
strategy focuses on developing an outline based on the prompt given in order to create a more
structured response. For example, by enhancing my research I was able to further understand the
subjects as well as the outcome. If I were to have a writing toolbox, the main thing I would
include is using the Purdue owl website to ensure proper formatting on every paper submitted.
Another tool I would frequently utilize is a general outline, specifically including a distinct
introduction and conclusion paragraph that make my main points of the essay clear.
Because of the skills I have acquired throughout my experience in college, I feel
thoroughly prepared for any prompts that my future may present. Improving my writing has
allowed me to express myself in ways that I deemed impossible. It has shown me how much my
intelligence has increased despite any challenges that I have faced. For my career, my goal is to
begin a position where I am able to write and direct a successful film. I feel that I will be able to
thrive in this position because of the writing tools I now possess. I have become very
compassionate about my work and believe that it could reach a greater audience. I hope to
inspire others one day by setting an example for others to use and construct their own artifacts.
