Acknowledgment
I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Danilo Razal for providing me an
opportunity to do this research paper.
I sincerely thank my parents Elmer Hernandez and Mercedes Hernandez for
providing me their guidance in carrying this research paper. I also give my gratitude to other
family members and friends, also to the almighty God who give me strength.
Dedication
First of all I would like to thank God for giving me strength to create this research
paper and to my family and friends for supporting and making me happy while creating this
research paper. And I just want to thank Mr. Danilo Razal for teaching me and my fellow
classmate to make a research paper so that we can use it on college.
Significance of the Research
This research paper is all about academic anxiety it can have a negative effect on
a student academic performance. Students with anxiety problem end to show lower levels of
academic achievement, self- efficacy and self- concept. Anxiety can reductive require the work
of students, teacher and parent. Mindfulness, meditation, metacognition coping, teacher
involvement and test question order are anxiety reduction strategies explored. Problem based
learning is teaching method proven to increase student level of positive metacognition.
Research Statement
Many students suffer anxiety when facing difficult academic tasks. Students
with learning disabilities after face more anxiety than general education. Different students
respond differently to anxiety. Teaching self- regulation in early childhood is important to reduce
the development of school related anxiety at an early age. Anxiety can have a negative impact on
the information processing system. People with anxiety have difficult storing and retrieving
information.
Recommendations
Academic anxiety can be minimized if addressed at an early age. Students need to
have a good study skills and test taking skills. More research is needed to show teachers how
they can help student combat anxiety every day in the classroom. By working closely with
parents, teachers can assure that parents understand effect of test preparation on academic
achievement and levels of anxiety. Reducing anxiety levels in students is important for helping
to increase academic achievement.
Anxiety can be a big problem for students with disabilities. Students with
disabilities cannot change the fact that they have a disability, and according to the Attribution
Theory, it is something they feel cannot change and will not succeed. They are scared to try
anything because they do not want others to see them struggle. Teacher must teach students to
use methods such as mindfulness meditation.
Vocabulary Words
Coping
The different responses a person uses to get through a stressful situation.
Mindfulness
Is a technique of being aware of your physical and mental states.
Anxiety
“a painful or apprehensive uneasiness of mind usually over an impending or anticipated
ill”. Students experiencing academic anxiety feel apprehensive over academic tasks.
Stress
How a person mentally and physically reacts to circumstances that are considered difficult
or challenging.
Self- Regulation
“self- control of thought, action, and emotion.
Metacognition
The awareness and understanding of one’s own though processes.
Detrain
The cause or assist to leave.
Detrimental
tending to cause harm.
Meditation
A practice where an individual uses a technique such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind
on a particular object, though, or activity
Effect of Academic Anxiety
Students with high levels of anxiety may also have more difficult when learning a
new language than student with lower level of anxiety it can also lead a problem with reading
comprehension. Some students are so worried about failing assignment or test that the student
cannot retrieve information or store new information. Student did not mind doing extra work if it
meant improving their grades. When students felt they are getting the attention and getting the
support of their teachers, they feel less anxiety. Many students suffer from tests anxiety because
lack of study skills.
Summary
Academic anxiety can have negative effect on student academic performance.
Teacher and parents can learn to recognize the sign of anxiety in students. If teachers and parents
help students learn to control anxiety early on. More serious academic problems related to
anxiety can be avoided.
Many students suffer from school related anxiety. Contemporary research is
supportive of the negative effects of anxiety and stress on academic performance in students of
all ages. Anxiety can also give negatively affect classroom behavior. Not all data are in support
of the negative effects of anxiety. Low self- concept and lack of motivation have been linked to
higher level of anxiety. Metacognition may help students learn to cope with anxiety and use self-
regulation of emotion to combat academic anxiety.
Conclusion
Academic anxiety is one of the important factors to detraining the academic
achievement of student, so there is need to manage academic anxiety to improve the academic
performance. There are so many factors that increase anxiety among students that affect
academic activities in so many ways. However, there are ways to reduce anxiety in students
which parents, teacher, students should have known and should followed that’s why future
generation achieve their target and able to face their life with courage. This paper also helps to
known more about academic anxiety.
Causes of Academic Anxiety
This is the 3 causes of academic anxiety that can be stressful for students who
suffer from it many people do not realize that is actually quite common. A history of poor testing
outcome. If you have done poorly on test before, either because you didn’t study well enough or
because you were so anxious, you couldn’t remember the answer, this can cause even more
anxiety and negative attitude every time you have to take another test: Being unprepared. If you
didn’t study well enough, this can add to your feeling of anxiety: Being failure. If you connect
your sense of self- worth to your test scores, the pressure you put on yourself can cause severe
academic anxiety.

student might not be able to complete group tasks or might not feel comfortable asking for help
in class. Social anxiety can go along with or even lead to academic performance. Students

experiencing academic anxiety feel apprehensive over academic tasks. Students can feel
anxiety related to every academic task. Some may only feel anxiety related to test taking or other
specific tasks. Anxiety is not always negative. Some students can be motivated by anxiety.

Apprehensive – anxious or fearful that something bad or unpleasant will happen.

Questionnaire:
1. Anxiety is a normal reaction to a certain situation.
2. A small level of anxiety is normal but severe anxiety can be a serious problem.
3. Academic anxiety can have negative effect on a student academic performance.
4. Anxiety can became more detrimental occur time.
5. Some students can be motivated by anxiety.
Components of Academic Anxiety
Academic anxiety has four components, worry, emotionality, task generated
interface and study skills deficits. The method of reducing your anxiety depends upon which of
these you are experiencing.
1. Worry: Thoughts that are prevent you from focusing on and successfully completing
academic work. For example, preoccupation with the consequences of doing poorly.
2. Emotionality: Biological symptoms of anxiety. For example, fast heart- beat, sweaty
palms, muscle tension. The most effective strategies for dealing with emotionality are
muscle and breathing relaxation exercises.
3. Task generated interference: Behaviors related to the task at hand, but which are
unproductive and prevents successful performance. For example, constantly checking the
clocks during an exam, or spending a lot of time on a test question you cannot answer.
4. Study skill deficits: Problems with your current study methods which create anxiety. For
example, last minute cramming resulting in not knowing answer to test question or poor
note- taking during lecture.
