Lesson Plan Template
Name: Jamie Isnor
Gr. Grade 1 Topic Healthy Living- Sharing Circles
Date Allotted Time 30-40 minutes
Rationale: How is this lesson relevant at this time with these students? Why is it important?
How does it fit with the rest of the unit?
This lesson plan contributes to a unit plan on healthy living. For this lesson I will
introduce the routine of sharing circles that I am hoping to incorporate as a routine once
a week for the duration of my practicum. I will introduce and explain to students that we
are going to be having a sharing circle every Friday before home time to share with one
another how we are feeling today. I will also go over the expectations of the speaker as
well as the audience when we are participating in sharing circles. We will finish our
lesson by participating in a sharing circle (I will demonstrate by sharing first and then
having the other students share prompting them if necessary)
Learning Intention: “I can participate respectfully and responsibly in a sharing
What will students learn? circle with my classmates”
( what do I want them to
learn?) “I can share with my friends how I am feeling”
“I can be a respectful audience member to my friends that are
sharing”
Evidence of Learning: I will be observing to see which students are able to
How will students show their participate responsibly and respectfully (observing body
learning? language of speaker and of audience, voice levels- are they
products speaking in a proud voice, do they feel comfortable and safe
sharing with a group?) If I notice certain behaviours arising or
observations conversations some students do not feel comfortable I can be more explicit
the following week with my expectations
Students will share “my name is _____”. “Today I feel _____,
because ______”
This also allows me to see how the students’ day is going (if
there any problems arising that my sponsor or I should be
aware of)

Criteria: Student sharing:
What criteria will help Student who is sharing will be holding the object.
students know how to be -Student will speak in a proud voice “My name is _____.”
successful? “Today I feel _____, because ______.”
(What will I look for in the
evidence?) Students who are listening
-Students will have calm bodies and voices
-Students will look to the speaker
-All students are sitting in a circle (knee to knee, eye to eye)
-If a student does not feel like sharing, they can simply say
“pass”
Planning for diversity (adaptations, extensions, other): In what ways does the lesson meet the needs of ALL
learners? How will you plan for students who have learning/behaviour difficulties or require enrichment?
There is one student in our class who has a full time EA working with them and is often
not in the classroom with us; this student will be encouraged to participate with the
group to the best of their ability
Some students in our class struggle with self-regulation at times; these students will be
encouraged to take 5 in the cozy corner until they are ready to rejoin the group if we feel
it is necessary
Resources, Material and Preparation: What resources, materials and preparation are required?
- Item to pass around when it is the speaker’s turn to speak (this could be a small
rock or gem)

Organizational/Management Strategies: (anything special to consider? How will you organize the activities,
the materials and the students so that things run smoothly? )
- I will encourage students to make a good choice when deciding who they are going
to sit beside in the circle; if I feel like students are sitting beside a friend who will
be distracting, I will quickly tell certain students to switch or come sit beside me if
necessary
- I will review expectations with students before we begin our sharing circle

intention! love hearing them share their - Ask questions
stories about their families,
friends and activities they did on
the weekend with me. Today I
thought we could practice doing
a sharing circle (this is something
that I would like to try to do
every Friday before we go home
for the weekend).
- Listen to instructions
Process:
Some First Nations communities - Ask questions
have sharing circles to share - Make comments/connections
information, stories and ideas
with the other people in their
community. Division 5 is like a
community as well; I think a
sharing circle is a great way for
us to share with each other and
Ms. Isnor information and how we
are feeling.
Everyone is going to sit in a circle
on the carpet criss cross. Show
students the item we are going to
pass around. We will pass the
item around the circle, when it is
your turn to have the gem you
get to share your thoughts with
the group. The rest of the group
is the audience and is listening
respectfully to the speaker
(brainstorm with students what
they think a respectful audience
member looks like). When it is
your turn to speak, I would like
you to first say “My name is
_____. “then “today I feel ____
because _____.” Once you have
finished sharing you will pass the
object to the person beside you.
If someone does not want to
share today that is totally fine;
just say “pass” and pass the item
along to the next friend

Give gentle reminders of

for the weekend. Brainstorm with for home time
the students some additional
topics we could use for our
sharing circles (example “I am
thankful for..”). Pack up gear to
get ready for home time
Reflection What was successful in this lesson? If taught again, what would you change to make this lesson
even more successful and inclusive for diverse and exceptional students?
