EQ: Essential Question: How do police officers make the community better?
Police Officer - George Perez 1

The Communities Protectors

A community needs help from people that want to make the community better and help it

be in a stable condition. To make the community be outstanding, safe, and secure, it needs police

officers to look out for the people, the citizens, and their environment. Police officers always

have it in their minds that their lives are at risk; once they step a foot outside in the role of law

enforcement, they are protectors who face risky situations and potential danger. These are people

who want to make the community better. Police officers' jobs are there to provide protection for

society, keep the community in a safe condition, and to maintain law and order.

A police officer’s primary goal is to provide protection for each and everyone who is a

part of the community. Over the years, police officers have been known for their job of bringing

protection to the community. A police job is risky, but they all have that in mind when they enter

this career. Officers just want their community to have protection from the danger that may cause

the community to be in a negative condition. According to Officer Pamela Keen, from the

Wyoming Department of Public Safety and Community Services Division, “By working in and

with the community, I am here every day, so I know what is or is not normal behavior. I can’t

see everything, so the police depend on community members to report when something is

happening. We work together to make a better community. Neither can do it alone” (Keen,

2020). Officers bring protection to the community, but police also need participation from the

community like reporting when something is getting out of hand.

Officers lookout for the community and their option is to make the community a safer

place for pedestrians. Police officers go out every day to make sure everything is safe. If they see

anything suspicious, they go and check it out to see if everything is alright. The Berwyn Police

Department shared that “When you call to report suspicious activity, you aid not only the Police

Department, but you make your neighborhood a safer place in which to live and work.”(Berwyn,

2020). Not only do the police work for everyone’s safety, but also the society. This gives people

the chance or the opportunity to call the police and report any suspicious activity. Berwyn Police

also said, “Many times people notice something suspicious but don’t call the Police Department

because they assume someone else has called. Don’t assume! Make the call – if the suspicious

activity has already been reported, the radio dispatcher will tell you,” (Berwyn, 2020). If

something is going on in the community, a person should report and not assume that the issue

has already been taken care of. When someone reports suspicious activity, they help the

community avoid danger and the police can then deal with the issue at hand. The goal is always

to make a community safe and secure.

Police officers serve the community because they want to help out the society and

maintain order. Police officers want to uphold the law, so people would always know that there

are rules around society. The City of Wyoming Michigan states that “The DUTY of the

Wyoming Police Department is to serve the people of our community with dignity, respect,

fairness, and compassion. We serve with the COURAGE to protect life and property and

maintain law and order” (City of Wyoming, 2020). Police work to protect the people and

maintain law and order around the city, which is the community. Officers go around the area of

the community and see if everything is looking secure and stable, or else they investigate until

they find out that there was something wrong going on throughout the day. Officer Keen said,

“Police help maintain order and a lawful society. We investigate crimes and assist in the criminal

justice system, which ensures the rights of everyone are respected.” (Keen, 2020). Officers

investigate anything that they believe could be a dangerous problem for society, and they make

sure everything is safe at the end of the day. Maintaining order and peace is a true priority for all

police officers.

In closing, police officers are heroes to the community because they put their lives out

there for the society. They make sure everyone is safe, and that property is secure and in good

condition and that no danger is threatening the community and/or its citizens. Police work with

dignity and they make sure people know what their rights are. Most important, they know they

are assigned to protecting everyone and they are the ones to solve the issues. Police officers

make the community better, they enforce the law, they protect, they make sure the community is

safe, and they maintain laws and order around the community.
