Adobe Pagmaker6
Adobe page maker is graphic application software specially used in page designing. Today it’s popular
in press and screen printing jobs, page designing for news paper & magazines, designing for visiting
cards, invitation cards etc. It is quite easy with its leading, tracking, set width features to adjust the text
and to make publication designing.

Document setup:
You can enter custom setting in the document setup dialog box or click ok button to begin laying out
your publication using the default or standard, setting that come with page maker.
      The double –sided is selected side margins are labeled inside and outside. Other wise side
       margins become left and right.
      If you know how many pages the publication will have, you can create them now.
      Select the options hen you change the page setting of an existing layout and want page maker
       automatically move and scale text and graphic objects.
      Select or enter the number of dots per inch (dpi) of your final output device.
      Specify the printer you will use to print the final version of your publication.
Tool box
The icons in the tool box represent the tools you use in page-maker to select a tool click it. If the
toolbox restricts your view of your work, drag its title bar to move it or choose windows ->Hide tools to
close the toolbox. See toolbox in the palates section for more information.
        Window to display or hide palate function, move the cursor changes over the palette below.
When the cursor changes to a small pointing hand, click the mouse button.

Palettes (Control Palettes in character view)
Adobe page-maker includes several palettes: The colors palette the control palette, the hyperlinks
palette, the layers palette, the master pages palette, the styles palette, and the tools palette. Additionally
two plug-in palette and the library palette-are installed automatically and are listed separately on the
window menu choose the appropriate show or hide command from the window menu.
Apply

Character-view and paragraph-view buttons: Toggle between two kinds of type settings.
Type-size option: Specify the type of size in points. Nudge amount: 0.1 point.
Expert tracking option: Type or select the amount of space between letters and words.
Kerning option: Increase, decrease, or view kerning increments, accurate to 0.001 of an em space.
Nudge amount: 0.01 em.
Type style buttons: Apply Normal, Bold, Italic, Underline, Reverse, or Strikethru.
Case buttons: Specify small caps or all caps, or deselect both buttons for normal case.

Position buttons: Specify Superscript or Subscript type, or deselect both buttons for normal position.
Leading option: Specify the vertical space between lines of type in a paragraph. Auto turns on
automatic leading at 120% of type size. Nudge amount: 0.1 point.
Set width option: Type values from 5% to 250% in increments of a tenth of 1% (Normal equals
100%, or the character width in the original font design). Nudge amount: 1%.
Baseline shift option: Specify the vertical position of text relative to the baseline. Nudge amount:
0.01 point.
Choose Window -> Show Control Palette to display the Control palette. To obtain information about
specific palette functions, move the cursor over the palette below; when the cursor changes to a small
pointing hand, click the mouse button
First indent: Specify the amount of indent for the first sentence in a paragraph.

Space-before and space-after options: Specify the amount of space to insert above or below the selected
paragraphs.
    Character-view and paragraph-view buttons: Toggle between two kinds of type settings.

    Alignment buttons: left align, right align, center align, justify, and force justify.
Cursor-position indicator: Tracks the position of the cursor on the publication page.
Left-indent option: Specify the amount of indent for the left side of the paragraph.
First indent: Specify the amount of indent for the first sentence in a paragraph.
Right-indent option: Specify the amount of indent for the right side of the paragraph.
    Space-before and space-after options: Specify the amount of space to insert above or below the
    selected paragraphs.
    Grid-size option: Specify the point size of the text grid to use when Align to Grid option is on.

    Align-to-grid option: Click the right icon to align columns vertically, according to the point size
    set in the Grid-size option.
Apply button: Applies changes to objects using numeric values you enter.
     Proxy: Represents the selected object. Click to set a reference point, or the point you are
     manipulating on the object.
     Nudge buttons: Click to move, resize or transform an object incrementally. Press Ctrl while
     nudging to multiply the nudge increment by ten.
     Position option: Displays the X and Y coordinate values of the reference point or pointer, relative to
     the current rulers.
     Nudge buttons: Click to move, resize or transform an object incrementally. Press Ctrl while
     nudging to multiply the nudge increment by ten.
     Sizing option: Specifies the width and height of the selected object or cropping rectangle. Nudge
     amount 0.01 inches.

     Percent-scaling option: Specifies the percentage changed from the original size. When the
     reference point on the Proxy is a square, the specified values resize the object from the
     reference point outward. When the reference point on the Proxy is an arrow, specified values
     resize the object by repositioning the reference point.
     Scaling option: Click to use scaling to resize an imported graphic.
     Cropping option: Click to use the cropping tool to crop an imported graphic (by changing
         values for X and Y or for H and W).
     Proportional-scaling option: Specifies whether you change an object's height and width
     independently, or maintain its original proportions.
     Printer-resolution-scaling option: Constrains scaling of imported 1-bit bitmap graphics so
     that they are compatible with the target printer resolution specified in the Document Setup
     dialog box.
     Nudge buttons: Click to move, resize or transform an object incrementally. Press Ctrl while
     nudging to multiply the nudge increment by ten.
     Rotating option: Rotates the object around the reference point (if the Proxy shows a square
     for the reference point) or rotates the reference point by the desired increment (if the Proxy
     shows an arrow for the reference point). Nudge amount: 0.1 degree.
     Skewing option: Skews objects horizontally -85 to 85 degrees in relation to the selected
     reference point. Nudge amount: 0.1 degree.
     Horizontal-reflecting button: Reflects the object vertically, and then rotates the object 180
     degrees so it appears reflected horizontally.
     Vertical-reflecting button: Reflects the object vertically.
Colors:
Color palette is used for designing, color separation matter. Colors palette, use it to apply colors or view
the name or kind of color applied to the selected text or object.
                Choose Window > Show Colors to display the Colors palette, and use it to apply colors
or view the name or kind of color applied to the selected text or object.
                         Click to open the Colors palette menu.
                         Click the stroke button to apply a color to the line on a rectangle, polygon,
                         ellipse or frame.
                         Click the fill button to change the fill color of a rectangle, polygon, ellipse or
                         frame.
                         Click the both button to apply the same color to both the stroke and the fill.
                         Specify a tint percentage to apply object-level tints of the base color applied
                         to the selection.
                         [None] removes a color applied in PageMaker to an object or an EPS graphic.
                         Applying [None] to a PageMaker-drawn object changes its fill or line
                         attribute to none; applying [None] to an EPS graphic restores the EPS to its
                         original colors.
                         [Paper] refers to the paper color on which you're printing. Objects behind a
                         paper-colored object won't print where the paper-colored object overlaps
                         them. Instead, the color of the paper on which you print shows through. You
                         can edit [Paper] to simulate the actual paper color
Style:
Choose windows show styles to display the styles palette and use it to styles or to view or edit styles
defined for the publication. To apply a style just click in a paragraph with the text tool and then click a
style name in the palette.

      You can move the styles palette by dragging its title bar or resize it by dragging any edge or
       corner.
      Highlighted styles marked with a plus sign (+) indicate selected text has additional formatting
       applied to it.
      You can add new styles to the palette or edit exiting styles using the define styles command.
                                      Click the new style button to create a new style and add it
                                       to the palette.
Layers
Layers to display the layers and use it to create edit lock and delete layers from publication. To obtain
information about specific palette functions move the cursor over the palette below; when the cursor
change to a small pointing hand click the mouse button .
File Menu
Open: Opens an existing PageMaker publication or template file. By default it opens the original
      Publication or a copy of the template file.
Recent Publications:
This command is used to lists the last eight PageMaker publication you opened and saved.
Close: This command is used to closes the active publication. To close all open publication at once
       press shift as you select this command from file menu.
 Save: This command is used to stores the active publication in a file with the same name or prompts
you for a name if the file has not been saved yet after saving you can continue to work in your
publication.

Save As: This command is used to rename your publication or template, or save it to a different disk or
folder. Unlike the Save command, Save As also compresses your file, making its file size as small as
possible
Revert: This command is used to removes all changes to the active publication since you last saved it.
Press Shift as you choose Revert to cancel changes since the last mini-save. Several operations cause
mini-saves, including turning, deleting or inserting pages, printing, and copying or pasting objects to the
Clipboard.
Place: This command is used to imports text, graphics, and spreadsheet or database files into the active
publication. The options available depend on what is selected when you choose this command. The files
you can place depend in part on the import filters installed.
Acquire: This command is used to acquire options to import TIFF images created in a separate device
into your publication, without leaving PageMaker. This device must support TWAIN, a cross-platform
interface, in order for you to take advantage of this feature.
Export: This command is used to export options for creating new files from elements within a
publication.
Links Manager: This command is used to lets you view link status, update, and manage linked files in
the other active publication.
Document Setup: This command is used to lets you change settings for a publication, first defined
when you chose New, such as page size, number of pages, and page-numbering. Margins are applied to
the document master page.
Print Styles: This command is used to lets you save, retrieve, and apply print settings to any
publication. You can define a printer style to ensure that your publications print consistently to a
specific printer, without resetting all print dialog box options for each print job.
Print: This command is used to prints a publication or book on a printer or to a disk as a PostScript file.
The printing options available depend on the printer you're using.
Preferences: This command controls various setting that apply to publications wide behavior.
              Such as: General, Online, Layout, Adjustment, Trapping, Setting defaults and preference
              setting CMS preferences font substitution basic editing in story editor.
Exit: This command ends the PageMaker session if you have not saved the current publication since
              you last edited them PageMaker prompts you to save changes before quitting.
Edit Menu
Paste Multiple
This command lets you duplicate selected objects by specifying the number of copies you want and
their numerical offset from the original object.
Paste Special
This command lets you specify the format in which you want to paste the Clipboard contents. Paste
Link option pastes an object from an OLE server into the publication.
Insert Object
This command lets you launch an application in which you create an object which is then pasted as an
object into the current publication.
Edit Story
This command opens the story editor to show the story currently selected, or opens a new story window
if no text is selected.
To work in story editor:
Click in a story with the text tool or the pointer tool.
Choose Edit > Edit Story.
When you are finished working in the story editor, choose Edit > Edit Layout to return to layout view.
Note: In layout view, you can triple-click on a text object with the pointer tool to open story editor.
Edit Original
This command is used to opens the source application to which the selected object is linked. Press Shift
+ this command to choose an application (other than the original source application) to edit the object.
Layout Menu:
Go to Page: This command turns to another page or master page in the active publication.
To move between publication pages:
Click a page icon along the bottom of the layout window. (Click the left or right arrows to view lower-
or higher-numbered page icons.)
Choose Layout > Go to Page, and type the page number you want to go.
To go to the previous page, press the Page Up key; to go to the next page, press the Page Down key
To go to the first page, press the Home key; to go to the final page, press the End key.
Insert Pages
This command is used to add pages to a publication before or after the current page, or insert new pages
between two facing pages, and specifies the master applied to new pages.
Remove Pages
This command is used to deletes the designated range of pages in a publication, including the text and
graphics on those pages.
Sort Pages
This command is used to move pages from one position to another in the active publication by
arranging thumbnail representations of your pages in the page order you want. PageMaker then reorders
and renumbers your pages based on the changes.

Go Back
This command is used to return to the previous page in the sequence of pages you have viewed since
you opened a publication.
Go Forward
This command is used to advance to the next page in the sequence of pages you have viewed since you
opened a publication.
Column Guides
Specifies the number of columns and the amount of space between the columns on the page.
To set up columns on a page:
1 Turn to the publication page or master page where you want the columns.
2 Choose Layout > Column Guides.
When facing pages appear in the publication window and you choose Column Guides, the Set Left and
Right Pages Separately option appears so you can set columns differently for each page.
3 Enter the number of columns you want on the page and the space you want between columns, called
the gutter. If you are setting left and right pages separately, enter values for both pages.
4 Select Adjust Layout if you want existing text and graphics on the page to adjust to the revised
column setup.
5 Click OK
PageMaker creates the specified number of columns, equally spaced and equally sized.
Auto flow
This command is used to checked, text flows into available columns until there's no more text to place.
Pages are added to the end of the publication if necessary. Switch between manual and automatic flow
by pressing Ctrl while text is flowing.
Type Menu:
Font
This command is used to select the font for a selected range of text, a default for a single publication, a
default for all future publications or the next text you place or type in.
Size
This command is used to specify text font size in points for a selected range of text as a default for a
single publication.
Leading
This command is used to sets the space, measured in points, between consecutive lines of type. Leading
can be selected for a range of text, as a default for a single publication.
To specify leading:
1 Select text, or choose Window > Show Styles, press Ctrl and click a paragraph style to edit.
2 Depending on your selection do the following:
• If you have text selected, choose Type > Leading, or Type > Character, or Window > Show Control
   palette.
• If you are editing a paragraph style, click Type in the Style Options dialog box.
Type Style
This command is used to set the style for a selected range of text or the next text you type. Text
formatting is applied at the character level.
Expert Tracking
This command is used to apply size-dependent letter spacing over a range of text instead of adjusting
the spacing between pairs of letters.
Expert Kerning
This command is used to automate kerning to give you fine control over letter spacing for headlines,
poster type, and other display type at large sizes. Expert Kerning evaluates every character pair in the
selected text, removes all manual kerning, and inserts kern-pair values into the text as manual kerning.
Horizontal Scale
This command is used to control the proportional width of characters for a selected range of text, for the
default for the current publication.
Character
This command is used to controls the font, size, and other attributes of a selected range of text, part of
the default, or part of a style.
To format text:
1 Using the text tool selects the text you want to format.
2 Choose the formatting attribute you want from the Type menu or use the Control palette.
To format several texts attributes at once:
1 With the text tool, select the text you want to format.
2 Choose Type > Character, or click the Control palette to activate it.
3 Change settings in the Character Specifications dialog box or on the Control palette.
To format characters by editing paragraph styles:
1 Choose Window > Show Styles.
2 Press Ctrl and click the paragraph style you want to revise.
3 Click Char to open the Character Specifications dialog box.
4 Select the formatting options you want.
5 Click OK in each dialog box to apply the changes.
The changes appear automatically in all paragraphs formatted with that paragraph style.
Paragraph
This command is used to sets the paragraph attributes specify the page, including alignment, position of
indents and tabs, and the amount of space before and after the paragraph. PageMaker provides several
ways to apply paragraph attributes, including the Styles palette, which lists a predefined group of
character and paragraph attributes applied to selected paragraphs, and the Control palette.
To format paragraphs:
1 Using the text tool clicks an insertion point in a single paragraph or select a range of paragraphs.
2 Choose Type > Paragraph.
 The Paragraph Specifications dialog box lets you apply formatting not available on the Control palette.
3 Select formatting options.
Indents/Tabs
This command is used to sets the left and right indents, the first-line indent, and the tabs. You can use
Indents/Tabs for a selected range of text, for text placed into PageMaker, for part of a style or for the
default settings.

Hyphenation
This command is used to controls PageMaker hyphenation. You can turn hyphenation on or off for a
selected paragraph from the Hyphenation dialog box or for a style from within the Define Styles dialog
box.
Alignment
This command is used to change the alignment of text at the paragraph level. You can choose to align
left, align center, align right, justify, or force justify.
Style
This command is used to apply styles already defined in the Styles palette on the paragraph level.
PageMaker applies the style to all paragraphs in the selected text, even if only part of a paragraph is
selected.
Define Styles
This command is used to create and edit paragraph styles for text typed in or placed into PageMaker.
Element Menu:
Fill
This command is used to specify a pattern when drawing a rectangle, ellipse, or polygon. A fill pattern
can also be applied to a selected box or oval. With the exception of none the patterns are opaque, hiding
whatever is behind them.
To apply or change fill and stroke attributes:
1 Using the pointer tool selects an object.
2 Use one of the following methods:
• To set both the fill pattern and stroke attributes for the selection, choose Element > Fill and Stroke,
  and select attributes from the Fill and Stroke pop-up menus.
• To change only the fill pattern or stroke attributes, choose Element > Fill or Element > Stroke and
   select attributes.
If the stroke size you want is not listed on the Stroke menus, choose Element > Stroke > Custom to
specify a weight from 0 to 800 points in 0.1 increments.
Stroke
This command is used to specify the line weight and pattern for the rectangle, ellipse, or polygon tool.
You can specify other line weights in one-tenth of point increments, up to 800 points.
Frame
This command is used to attach the text and graphics to a frame, set attributes for frames and the objects
they contain, and navigate among frames.
Arrange
This command is used to bring to Front moves selected objects to the front of any overlapping objects.
Unavailable if no objects are selected, or no publication is open.
Align
This command is used to align selected objects in relation to each other, and then evenly distribute
them.

Text Wrap
This command is used to determine how text flows when it encounters a graphic object. Text interacts
with a graphic object in three ways: it can cover the graphic object, wrap around the sides of a
rectangular shape, or wrap around the sides of an irregular shape.
Group
This command is used to combines one or more selected objects into a group so that the objects are
treated as a unit.
Ungroup
This command is used to separates grouped object into constituent objects. The objects retain the
changes you made while the objects were grouped.
Lock Position
This command is used to maintain objects in place. You can change the attributes of a locked object as
long as the change does not affect the object's size or position.
Unlock
This command is used to Undoes Lock Position command, allowing movement of selected object.
Mask
This command is used to cover part of an object so that only a portion of it appears through a shape
drawn with the rectangle, ellipse, or polygon tool. In PageMaker, you mask objects by positioning the
mask or masking object on the objects you want to mask, selecting both objects, and choosing the
Element > Mask command.
Unmask
This command is used to undo a mask by selecting the masking object or the masked object, and
choosing the Element > Unmask command.
Image Control
This command is used to alter the appearance of a selected bitmapped image if it is a paint-type graphic
or a scanned TIFF image.
Polygon Settings
This command is used to change the shape of polygons. You can change the number of sides (up to
100) and the degree to which the sides are inset to form a star. With no object selected, the chosen
setting becomes the default for PageMaker-drawn polygons Unavailable if the selected object is not a
polygon drawn in PageMaker.
Rounded Corners
This command is used to select the shape of corners when a PageMaker-drawn box is selected. With no
object selected, the chosen setting becomes the default for PageMaker-drawn boxes. Unavailable if the
selected object is not a box drawn in PageMaker.
Link Info
Displays link information about a selected object.
Link Options
This command is used to control the way PageMaker handles linked files. You can store a linked file in
the publication file, update the linked object when the original is updated, and have PageMaker alert
you when a linked file has been updated.

Non-Printing
This command is used to designate a selected object as non-printing, so that it does not print. You can
hide or display non-printing objects on screen with the Layout > Display Non-Printing command.
Remove Transformation
This command is used to removes rotation, skewing, and reflection for the selected object. Unavailable
if no object is selected, or because the object selected has not been rotated, skewed, or reflected.
Utilities Menu
Plug-ins
This command is used to displays a list of installed PageMaker Plug-ins.
Find
This command is used to locate specified text, characters, or formatting (Font, Size, and so on) in the
selected text, in an entire story, in all stories in the active publication, or in all stories in all open
publications.
Find Next
This command used after you've specified text, characters, or formatting (Font, Size, and so on) with
Find, this command finds the next instance. Available only in Story view after you've used the Find
command.
Change
This command is used to locate and replaces specified text, characters, or formatting (Font, Size, and so
on) in the selected text, in an entire story, in all stories in the active publication, or in all stories in all
open publications.
Spelling
This command is used to checks and helps correct spelling and basic grammatical error in the selected
text, in an entire story, in all stories in the active publication.
Book
This command is used to compiles two or more PageMaker publications into a book and creates a book
list of the names of the publications. You can compile an index and a table of contents from all the
publications in the book, and print all booked publications at once.
Index Entry
This command is used to opens a dialog box to define an index entry at the insertion point. Unavailable
if no text or insertion point is selected.
Show Index
This command is used to displays all index entries throughout the publication or book (one index
section at a time) for review and editing. To view entries for just the current publication in a book, press
Shift as you choose this command.
Create Index
This command is used to compiles and formats the index entries throughout the booked publication (or
for the active publication only) into a single story you can then flow.
Create TOC
This command is used to generate a Table of Contents consisting of all paragraphs in the booked
publication (or in the active publication only) that have the Include in TOC attribute checked in the
Paragraph Specifications dialog box.

Define Colors
This command is used to create and edit custom colors that you can apply to text or graphic objects.
You can also import colors from industry-standard and custom color libraries.

Windows Menu
Tile
This command is used to places open publication or story windows side-by-side. To tile all open story
windows in all open publications at once, press Shift as you select this command.
Cascade
This command is used to rearranges open publication or story windows by overlapping them so that title
bars are visible. To cascade all open story windows in all open publications at once, press Shift as you
select this command.
Show/Hide Tools
This command is used to displays or hides the floating palette from which you select PageMaker's
drawing and editing tools.
Show/Hide Control Palette
This command is used to displays or hides the palette for manipulating objects or (when text is selected)
applying text and paragraph styles and attributes.
Show/Hide Colors
This command is used to displays or hides the palette which lists the defined colors, imported EPS
colors, and default colors in the active publication. Click a color to apply it to the selected object or text.
You can control whether you color the stroke and/or fill for a selected shape.
Show/Hide Styles
This command is used to displays or hides the Styles palette. To apply a style using the Styles palette,
click an insertion point in a paragraph or select a range of text. Then click a style in the palette.
Show/Hide Master Pages
This command is used to opens the Master Pages palette, which you can use to create, edit, and apply
master pages.
Show/Hide Hyperlinks
This command is used to opens the Hyperlinks palette, which you can use to create, edit, and apply
Hyperlinks.
Show/Hide Layers
This command is used to displays or hides the Layers palette, which you can use to create, edit, lock
and delete layers.
Plug-in Palettes
This command is used to shows or hides palettes made available by PageMaker plug-in modules.
