Story 1

In a small Krishna temple in a village in Kerala, the poor priest who performed daily prayers was accompanied by his 3-year old son. One afternoon, as the priest rested and his son played as usual, Lord Krishna visited the boy and gifted him a golden waist band for the upcoming Vishu holiday. However, when the landlord saw the boy with the band, he accused the priest and son of theft. Lord Krishna, angered by their treatment, made the band disappear from the landlord's hands and transform into beautiful yellow flowers on a nearby tree, now known as Golden Shower flowers used in Vishu decorations as a symbol of Krishna's love for children.

In a village in Kerala, there was a small Krishna temple.

The Landlord of the village had employed

a poor Priest from the neighbouring village to perform the pooja in the temple every morning and
evening. The Priest was everyday accompanied by his 3 year old son.Every afternoon he would
finish up his daily duties and rest in the verandah of the temple while the boy played nearby. With
his eye half closed the Priest would watch his son laugh and play all alone. However, the kid
wasn't alone as he had the company of Lord Krishna and only the child knew about this. This
continued for a while. One day,it was the previous day of Vishu, the Priest was very exhausted by
afternoon as he had cleaned up the entire temple premises and had made arrangements for
Vishu. As usual after all his chores he went to the verandah and as soon as he lay down he fell
asleep. That afternoon as usual Lord Krishna visited the child and they played for a while.A little
later Lord Krishna took out his golden waist band and gifted it to the child as Vishu Kaineettam (a
gift given mostly in the form of money/gold coins by elders in the family to children on Vishu)
The boy was very happy to receive his kaineettan but as he stood there admiring the band, the
landlord arrived at the temple. On seeing the golden waist band of Lord Krishna in the hands of
the boy he snatched it raised an alarm and began accusing the father and son of theft. All the
villagers gathered at the temple. The Priest pleaded innocent and cried requesting everybody to
believe him. The villagers were however, in no mood to pay any heed. Lord Krishna who sat their
watching all this was infuriated by the behaviour meted out to the priest and the child. He walked
up to the Landlord snatched the waist band and threw it away. The Landlord and other onlookers
were taken aback seeing the waist band fly out of the Landlord's hand on its own. The band went
and fell on a Konna tree (Golden Shower tree) that grew in the temple premises. The moment the
belt fell on the tree the golden bells of the waist band changed into beautiful yellow flowers.
These flowers have since then been known Konna poo (Golden shower flowers). The Golden
Shower flowers are used to set the Kani (an arrangement of auspicious things laid out in front of
Lord Krishna. Kani literally means "that which is seen first thing in the morning") on Vishu as a
symbol of Lord Krishna's love for children.
