Work Log
Before an internship ;
Date : 21 August 2019
Location : Mahidol University International Demonstration School
By now, two weeks have passed since the day Mr.Walsh, my
capstone project teacher, explained and gave an idea about the
project. The instruction was that students in grade 11 need to do a
capstone project in order to graduate from this school which we can
choose the types of projects that we want to do. The suggestions
from the school are Scientific inquiry, artistic portfolio,
design-and-build project, business plan, or an internship. After that
Mr. Walsh gave us an instruction paper of the capstone project that
includes the information about the final product requirements and the
grading rubrics for all types of projects. Finally, I decided to do an
internship because I’ve been thinking about the time that I have until
the due dates which I have very less and I have lots of work to do. I
also believed that the internship will take me less time to finish than
working on academic projects, so I chose to do an internship.

I’ve been thinking about where I’m going to do my internship for
the whole week and I decided to go to Ramathibodi hospital. I
decided to go there because I’m interested in the medical course and
hospital work. Even though I'm a business student who studies
marketing for the elective subject, I still want to gain new experience
from working in the hospital and explore myself too. However, the
reason why I chose to go to Ramathibodi hospital was because this
hospital is a hospital under the government which people that come
here are more struggling than the people that go to a private hospital
so I really feel like I want to help them more.

I submitted the internship application form to the student office
for 3 days already and there is a confirmation email from the hospital
that I’m accepted to do an internship there. The student office called
me to go meet them. After that, the teacher who is in charge of taking
care of the internship student gave me an internship preparation
document.

It is one more day until my first day of an internship at
Ramathibodi hospital. I spend my time reading through the
preparation paper to prepare myself the best I could do. I prepared
my citizen card and the school uniform with proper shoes. I was so
excited to meet new people and work in a public place. I sleep very
early to be able to wake up at 5.30 am in the morning.
During an internship ;
Date : 9 Oct 2019
Location : Surgical Department
Time : 7.30 AM to 15.30 PM
This is the first day of my internship. In the morning I prepared
myself very quickly in order to be on time for the first meeting at the
hospital. When I arrived, I met my friends that are coming on an
internship too and we went straight to the counseling department for
the meeting. The person that takes care of the internship students is
Ms. Jun who introduced us to the work in the hospital and briefed us
on how to do the work correctly. After that, she invited us into the line
group that has all the information about the work. Then she gave me
and my friends our name tags and the blue uniforms that represent
us as an internship student. Then she assigned us to work in different
departments. There are few departments that we are able to go to
which are Outpatient, Surgical, Pediatrics, Medicine, Ophthalmology,
Pharmaceutical, and Orthopedic department. Me and my best friend
were assigned to the Surgical Department. We walked about 350
meter to the department because the building that the Surgical
Department is in is not at the same building that we have the
meeting. When I arrived, the nurse at this department briefed me on
more specific work that I need to do. I helped the nurse fill in the
patient information into the computer. I printed the EMR progress of
the patients and sent them to the doctor rooms. I scanned the patient
document that was checked and stamped a sign on it to show that it
was already checked and sent them to the nurse staff that keep all
the patient’s document. I also copied some medical documents that
are important. And when it was 12 o’clock in the afternoon, I had a
lunch break and then when it was 1.00pm I needed to return back to
work again until 3.30 pm. After that I needed to walk back to the
consoling department to sign out my name with the finish work time
and return the uniform. I’m very tired but I also had so much fun
working.
Date : 21 October 2019
Location : Medicine Department
Time : 7.30 AM to 15.30 PM
Today is my second day working in the hospital. I woke up very
early again to be on time to sign my name with the arrival time at
7.30. Today, I was sent to the Medicine Department and I needed to
walk for a long way again. When I arrived I was so surprised because
this department has a lot more patients than the Surgical
Department. Then I realized that it was because this department has
many more specific clinics here. The nurses here were more friendly
too and I think it’s because they need to meet more patients so they
are more professional in communicating with people. They briefed me
on the work and told me not to do the warning thing such as giving
the patient information that I don’t know or giving medical
information randomly. My work was in two stations, the first station is
the checking of the patient’s vital signs of blood pressure,
temperature, and oxygen saturation. The second one is checking the
patient’s weight and height. But the nurse usually wants me to help
on the second station because I’m tall so it is perfect for me to
measure the height of the patient. After checking everything, I helped
the nurse call up and queue the patients. The most important thing
that I need to remind myself all the time as the nurses taught me is
that I need to wear a mask and I need to wash my hands using
alcohol gel frequently.
Due to the varieties clinic in the Medicine Department, the
counter where I sit was beside the neuralgia clinic. I saw many
neuroses doing weird things such as laughing without anything
happening, bullying other people sitting beside them, screaming out
loud and one of them screaming bad words out to the nurses. I and
the other patients were so shocked but then the nurses can handle
the situation. This was a new experience for me that I don’t think I
can get it from anywhere else except from here. However, I’ve
learned how the nurses deal with these kinds of people.

Date : 22 October 2019
Location : Medicine Department
Time : 7.30 AM to 15.30 PM
I was assigned to an Medicine Department again and I was
welcome because I really enjoyed working here. I like to work with
people, not the papering work because I get to concentrate. Today, I
got to help the nurse check the patients’ vital signs of blood pressure,
temperature, oxygen saturation, weight and height same as last time
but this time I also got to help them put in the patient information into
the computer too so I’ve learned about the hospital process and the
management. Some nurses also gave me extra knowledge about the
disease, sickness, and medical too.
There are two new experiences for me this time. In the morning
when I was checking the patient's vital signs of blood pressure, she
breathed hard. Then the nurse asked if she was okay, and she
answered that it’s normal for her to breath like this because of
shingles. Then the nurse's face turned green as she told me to go
wash my hands and wear a mask and the other nurse also did the
same thing as me automatically. Then she asked the patient to wear a
mask but she refused to do it. I was so confused but I followed what
the nurse said. I put on the alcohol gel in my hands and washed but
the nurse told me to go wash my hands at the toilet which makes me
get more confused. After I came back I asked the nurse what
happened then she explained to me that shingles is a disease that
can be transmitted through respiration and exposure but that patient
didn’t do what she should so we need to protect ourselves as much
as we could.

Date : 24 October 2019
Location : Hearing aids Department
Time : 7.30 AM to 15.30 PM
Work : I started the day with a shocking story. There was one patient
that the nurses needed to work so hard to communicate with
because he had a poor hearing, he is going to sell his house and he
also wants to kill himself. I heard this story from the head of the nurse
talking to Ms.Jun in the consoling department where I come to sign
my name at the beginning of the day. But the surprising thing is that
Ms.Jun assigned me to go help the head of the nurse take care of this
patient. I was so shocked because I have no ability to work with this
type of patient so I asked Ms.Jun if I am really able to do this work and
she said that I just need to help the nurse not working alone so I
should be able to do it. Then I helped the head of the nurses take care
of him through every progress in the hospital. I try my best to
communicate with him when he doesn't hear what other people say
by writing. I push the wheelchair for him to every station in the
hospital. I brought him to queue in order to meet the doctor. And
while he was queuing, he needed to take antihypertensive medicine
but he didn’t have breakfast yet so I also went to buy him some food
and drink. The patients here are very struggling like this old man
because he came to the hospital very early in the morning without
having breakfast in order to get the doctor queue. When I see these
people I feel very dismal, but after I help them, I feel very proud of
myself.

Date : 25 October 2019
Location : Medicine Department
Time : 7.30 AM to 15.30 PM
Work : This was my fifth day working in this hospital but it’s also my
third time I was assigned to the Medicine Department. I helped the
nurse check the patients’ vital signs of blood pressure, temperature,
oxygen saturation, weight and height and then put all of their
information into the computer. Since it was the third time for me
working at this department. I’m getting more used to the work and I
got actual knowledge from doing this work. I’ve learned that when
the patients are measuring their vital signs of blood pressure, they
should place their arms relax in order to get the most accurate
pressure result. Every patient that is suffering with high blood
pressure symptoms needs to take their medicine before coming to
see a doctor every time. When the patients are checking their oxygen
saturation, they need to take a deep breath to get the right percent of
the result and the people at the teenager ages should get 100%
result of the oxygen saturation. When I put all the patients
information in the computer, it will diagnose abnormalities of patients
automatically. If the patients are abnormal, the rews sign will show
up in green colour but sometimes will show up red when the patient
is in high risk. Then there will be a special nurse who comes to take
them to check their risk. I love to learn new things like this. From
doing this work, I have an opportunity to learn many small details in
the hospital and I will adapt these things I knew when I go to the
hospital in my real life.
Date : 8 November 2019
Location : Pharmaceutical Department
Time : 7.30 AM to 15.30 PM
Work : This was my last day working on my internship. I was
assigned to the Pharmaceutical Department. When I first arrived, the
nurse taught me all the things that I need to do. I helped the medical
nurses categorize different types of medicine and arranged them into
the correct shelves. I packed many kinds of medicine into boxes and
sent them to another Pharmaceutical Department. I also got to pack
the hypodermic syringes in the seal boxes which I needed to wear
medical gloves too while packing to protect the syringes from dirth or
bacteria in the air. I had so much fun classifying different types of
hypodermic syringes because they come in different colours and sizes
which they are used for different purposes.
After lunch time, I don’t need to work until the end of the day
like usual because Ms.jun took me and my friends out to get our work
certificate and take a group photo. Then, Ms.Jun took us to the
meeting room to exchange our experiences working in the hospital
together. We talked for 30 minutes and then we all headed back
home.
When I’m on the way home I kept thinking about how fun I got
to work with the people in this hospital. I got to have fun, I got to gain
new knowledge, I got to make friends with the nurses and I also got
tons of new experiences that I couldn’t get from anywhere else in my
daily life. I really love working here and I can’t believe that I’ve been
through six here already. If I have a chance to come work here again, I
will definitely come for sure.
