Question: How and when can a foreign national candidate apply for admission?
Answer: Application form is made available on JNU website at http://www.jnu.ac.in/
Admission /FN-Form_Regular.pdf for admission to various programme of study for
the Monsoon Semester beginning July.

Question: Whether a foreign national candidate can apply without appearing in entrance
examination conduct by the JNU for admission?
Answer: Foreign national candidate who is present in India during the period of entrance
examination conduct by the University has to appear in the entrance examination for
which online application form is made available on JNU websites at
http://www.jnu.ac.in and http://www.jnuonline.in In case a foreign national
candidate is not available in India to appear in entrance examination, he/she can
apply under “in absentia” category for which separate application form is available
on JNU website at http://www.jnu.ac.in/Admission/FN-Form_Regular.pdf.
Candidate can take a print of the application form under “in absentia” category, fill
in capital letters and send with a Bank draft of US dollar 25 in favour of “Jawaharlal
Nehru University, New Delhi” alongwith all documents as indicated in the
application form. Application form is also made available at JNU Admission Branch
on payment of US dollar 25 or Indian Rupees 1250. In case the foreign national
candidate applying under “in absentia” category is found available in India or in a
country where JNU has a examination centre, his/her admission will be cancelled
ipso facto.

Question: What are eligibility requirements for admission?


Answer: The admission of foreign national candidate is subject to fulfilling minimum
eligibility requirement as prescribed for Indian candidate and subject to equivalence
of qualification at par with Indian standard. In case at a late stage, it is found that the
eligibility conditions are not fulfilled, the offer of admission is treated as cancelled
ipso facto.

Question: Where can I get information about eligibility criteria/conditions for admission
of foreign national candidate?
Answer: Information about eligibility criteria/conditions for admission to various programme

Question: What are the documents required at the time of registration?
Answer: In the event of selection, the following documents are to be produced, in original, as
well as one copy of each document, for verification at the time of registration
a. All relevant certificates/degrees/marksheets of the qualifying examination in
support of the eligibility conditions as prescribed by the University for
Admission.
b. In case the certificates/degrees/marksheets of the qualifying examination are in a
language other than English, the same should be got translated into English
language and produce at the time of registration.
c. Valid passport and Student Visa/Research Visa, as the case may be
d. Health Certificate (Medical Fitness Certificate) and Health Insurance Documents.
e. 8 passport size photographs.
f. Bank Statement indicating sufficient fund in his/her account or Bank Statement of
parent(s) with a letter indicating that they will financially support during the study
in JNU.
g. In case candidate is in service, a permission letter/leave sanction order from
employer for the duration of programme of study applied for.

Question: How much tuition fees payable by foreign national student?


Answer: Foreign students admitted to various programme of study including casual students
are required to pay fees and incidental charges as per the following rates in US dollar
or in Indian Currency as per the prevalent exchange rates:
Courses in Sciences Disciplines – Tuition fees US dollar 750 plus incidental
charges US dollar 100 per semester and for courses in Humanities & Social
Sciences- Tuition fees US dollar 500 plus incidental charges US dollar 100 per
semester.

Question: When the tuition fees and other charges are payable for admission?
Answer: Tuition fees and other charges like incidental charges, hostel charges, etc are payable
at the time of admission/registration. However, cost of application form i.e. US
dollar 25 is payable through Bank Draft in favour of “Finance Officer, Jawaharlal
Nehru University” with the application form.

Question: In which currency a foreign national has to pay tuition fees and other charges?
Answer: Foreign national candidate has option to pay tuition fee and Incidental charges either
in US dollars or in Indian Rupees. Other charges like hostel fees are, however,
payable in Indian Rupees.

Question: From where can I get details of courses for master’s degree programme?
Answer: Details of courses are available on JNU website in each School/Centre. For
example, a list of courses for M.A. in Politics (with Specialisation in International
Relations) is available at http://www.jnu.ac.in/Academics/Schools/SchoolOf
InternationalStudies/CCPPT_Courses.pdf
Question: What is the duration of programme of study?
Answer: The duration of Bachelor degree (undergraduate) programme is three years (six
semesters). Master degree programme is two years (four semesters). M.Phil/Ph.D is
an integrated programme of study. After completion of M.Phil programme of study
in two years (four semesters), a student is allowed to continue Ph.D degree
programme without applying afresh. The maximum period for completion of
M.Phil/Ph.D integrated programme is six years plus one year grace period.

Question: What type of visa requires for admission to various Degree programmes?
Answer: Candidate selected for admission to Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree and M.Phil
Degree programme is required to produce ‘Student Visa’ at the time of
admission/registration. M.Phil/Ph.D, Pre.Ph.D/Ph.D and M.Tech/Ph.D are
integrated programme of the University. Hence, on completion of M.Phil, Pre.Ph.D
or M.Tech programme successfully, the students will have to submit Research Visa
to continue their Ph.D programme in the University. Candidate selected for
admission to Direct Ph.D programme is required to produce Research Visa.

Question: When a foreign national candidate has to apply for Student/Research Visa?
Answer: On receipt of admission letter from JNU, candidate can apply for Student/ Research
Visa, as the case may be.

Question: Whether a foreign candidate has to contact a professor to be a Supervisor or


Guide before applying to M.Phil/Ph.D programme of study?
Answer: There is no such requirement at the time of applying for admission. Student is
assigned a Supervisor or Guide at the time of admission/registration.

Question: What kind of Medical Fitness Certificate require with the application form?
Answer: A Medical Fitness Certificate indicating that the candidate is medically fit and there
is no communicable disease which renders him/her unfit to study in India is
sufficient from the authorised doctor or hospital.

Question: When the classes start?


Answer: The classes are started in July every year.

Question: What is the period of semesters and vacations?


Answer: Academic calendar (Academic Year) starts from Monsoon Semester beginning 22nd
July every year with the following semesters and vacations:
Monsoon Semester from 22nd July to 5th December
Winter Break from 6th December to 5th January
Winter Semester from 6th January to 12th May
Summer Vacation from 13th May to 21st July
Question: Whose bank statement is required and how much money should be available in
account?
Answer: A certificate from the Bank or Bank Account Statement of the applicant to the effect
that sufficient funds are available in the account of the applicant to sustain his/her
studies in India for the duration of the programme is required with the application
form. In case parent of the candidate is financially supporting to study in JNU, then
a certificate from the Bank or Bank Account Statement of the parent or guardian is
required alongwith a letter from parent/guardian.

Question: Whether foreign national students will be provided hostel accommodation?


Answer: Foreign national students are provided hostel accommodation at the time of
registration. However, due to shortage of hostel accommodation, it may sometime
take few days to allot accommodation. It is suggested that on receipt of admission
letter, candidate may write to Dean of Students of the University to explore the
possibility of hostel accommodation at the earliest.

Question: Whether separate hostel accommodation is available for foreign national


students?
Answer: There is no separate hostel accommodation for foreign national students. Foreign
national students are allotted room in any hostel available at the time of
admission/registration.

Question: How far is the hostel from study place?


Answer: All hostels are very near to study place at a walking distance of not more than 5-10
minutes.

Question: What is casual studentship?


Answer: In case a foreign national student wishes to join JNU for a limited period i.e. one
semester or two semesters to audit the courses and to strengthen knowledge on a
particular field of study, he/she can apply for casual studentship for which form is
available at http://www.jnu.ac.in/Admission/FN-Form_casual.pdf. Casual students
are not awarded any degree/diploma/mark-sheet from the University.

Question: How can a foreign national candidate apply for casual studentship under
exchange programme for one or two semesters?
Answer: You have to contact to the Head of International Students Exchange Department of
your University and ask whether they have any agreement (Memorandum of
Understanding) with Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. If your University has
an agreement with JNU, then, apply on a form available at
http://www.jnu.ac.in/Admission/FN-Form_casual.pdf and enclose a copy of
agreement, passport, medical fitness certificate and recommendation letter from your
University indicating that you have been sponsored to study in JNU under exchange
agreement. In case your University do not have an agreement with JNU and you
wish to apply for casual studentship, then apply as Self Supporting student. Same
form will be applicable.

Question: Whether a casual student under exchange programme is awarded credits for
the courses?
Answer: Casual students under exchange programme is awarded credits by the concerned
Centres/Schools for the courses they appeared in examination subject to maximum
four courses in one semester.
