0610 Paper 41 November 2019
1)a) They have longer bodies
They have many more legs
b) Crustaceans and arachnids
c)
 Class Letters
 1 J
 2 L
 3 M, O
 4 K, N
d)i) Genus: Apheloria
Kingdom: Animal
d)ii) If the mitochondria stop functioning aerobic reparation doesn’t occur and
will not release energy. So, the cells die.
2)a) In plants carbohydrates can be used to do cellular respiration allowing for
the release of energy. It can also be used to attract insects to carry pollen by
either sprouting flowers or making nectar. Amino acids can be used to make
proteins that can help the plant grow.
b)
c)i) Aphid D ingested the highest concentration of sucrose because aphid D is
closer to the roots and the starch is stored in the roots. Also, because sucrose
moves up the plant aphid D will get more sucrose.
c)ii) Farmers could genetically modify their plants and hope to get a gene that
allows for the plant to gain a resistance.
c)iii) They can transport pollen and allow for pollination to occur.
3)a) To remove metabolic wastes from the body. Cortex
b)
                   Ureter
                                                                          Medulla
c)i) It is a bunch of capillaries tangled together to make the shape of a ball.
d)i) Salts are reabsorbed against a concentration gradient by active transport
which requires energy. They are transported through a cell membrane from a
low to high concentration.
d)ii)
 Human Mouse
 575÷320 0.551÷0.31
 =1.797 =1.778
 ≈1.8 ≈1.8
Hypothesis is true since results are similar.
d)iii) Osmosis
d)iv) Glucose
4)a) One of the body’s defence mechanism are the white blood cells which are
involved in the immune system, one type of white blood cells are the
lymphocytes they produce antibodies to defend against infection. The type of
white blood cells are the phagocytes which engulf microorganisms by the
process called phagocytosis. Another one of the body’s defence mechanisms
are the memory cells that are produced after the use of a vaccine.
b) Antibiotics
5)a)i) Coronary artery
a)ii) A blood clot can form when platelets stick together or when fibrinogen is
converted into fibrin.
a)iii) Aspirin
b)i)1.88, 0.04
1.88-0.04=-1.84
1.84÷1.88=0.978723404255
0.978723404255x100=97.8723404255%
≈98%
b)ii) Health professionals should use this study because as exercise increased
from 0.0 to 4.1-10.0 hours per week, the amount of CHD deaths decreased
from 1.88 to 0.04 deaths per 10000 women. It is also very easy to do a little
exercise for such an amount of risk removed. Health professionals shouldn’t
use this study because only women are tested in the study and because there
are other things killing women like smoking and alcohol. The women did
different exercises and different lengths of exercises.
c) Exercise causes an increase in heart rate because more blood, oxygen and
energy are needed in the muscles since the muscles require more energy. The
heart rate also goes up so that aerobic respiration can occur quicker.
6)a) You could have weak bones because of the bad absorption of calcium.
b) Some of the reasons fish are becoming endangerd are because fishermen
are overfishing to make more money, their habitats could be destroyed (via
humans, climate change, pollution). The risks if populations drop are that the
reproduction rates are lower meaning there is reduced variation adding risk.
Some ways of maintaining fish stocks are educating the next generation,
restrictions and personal fish farming areas.
7)a)i) Lightning
a)ii) A:Dentrification
      B:Nitrification
a)iii) Ammonia
a)iv) The destructions of nitrogen atoms to form urea
b) Ribosome
c) Pepsin
