Creating Our Future
The future always begins right now & is not predetermined.
I have the power to shape the future. What I do makes a difference & will shape my
future. What I do will have an impact on the future of those close to me & even those
distant from me.
My power provides me with the opportunity, challenge & obligation to become what I
wish to become & shape the world as I wish it to become. This responsibility cannot be
escaped or delegated.
I am responsible for what I do, & for what I am, & for the world
around me. I would not have it any other way.
The exercise of power without vision has no meaning.
Therefore, I must be very clear about the things I value & the kind of world I want to live
in. I must decide what is most important & what is less so & live for what is most
important.
I am capable of making these decisions.
The exercise of power without knowledge will probably be ineffective. It may even be
dangerous. Therefore, I must strive to see the world as clearly & truly as it can be seen. I
must understand the working of those parts of the world which affect the things of
importance to me.
I am capable of gaining the knowledge I need.
I recognize that expertise exists & is important. Experts can help me to gain the
knowledge I need. But I know, also, the views of experts differ & may be colored by
values quite different from mine. There is a difference between expertise & truth.
I must decide for myself what is true & act accordingly.
No one can take my power from me. This gives me the self-confidence to exercise power
with humility & compassion. I can be open to new knowledge, & new ways of looking at
things. While I can shape the future, I know I cannot plan it with certainty nor know all
the consequences of my actions. Nor can I avoid errors. I know that human beings learn
by trial & error, mostly error.
I must be a learner. I must not fear my errors nor be scornful of
the errors made by others.
I await with excitement what I shall do, & learn & become.
