Time Allotment: 50 minutes
Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of how communicative, competence is best explored
through the different domains of literacy enabling him/her to analyze, do critical evaluation, and make
critical choices to suit different purposes without sacrificing socio-cultural values and attitude.
Performance Standard:
The learner shows sophistication on the power and effect of communicative competence through
creative, critical, confident and responsive interaction employing varied types of strategies to suit different
audiences in formal and non-formal situations.

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
 Explain how the elements specific to a genre contribute to the message of a particular literary
selection.
 Generate the significance of a mother’s love and wisdom as a worthwhile human value as it enhances
substance among the youth which expands their experiences and ideals in life.

PRIMING
The teacher will play the chorus part of the song entitled “Mama” by Spice Girls and ask the
students to close their eyes as they listen to the song.

Activity
A. Acronymy :
The teacher will ask the students who is being talked about in the song. The students will
describe their/a mother by providing words which starts with:

What does your/ a mother symbolize? How significant is her role in honing your
individuality?

C. Discussion of the short story through a picture puzzle.

1. The teacher will prepare a picture which is cut into 6 and will serve as a puzzle. Each piece
contains the chronology of the events which transpired in the story, “The Story of the Aged
Mother”.
2. Some representatives from the class will be called and will analyze which among the piece
happened first until the last event. At the end of the discussion, a picture of a mother and son
will be revealed.

The values of the Japanese people depicted in the selection “The Story of the Aged Mother” are love,

The students will be grouped into 3 in accordance with their interest and are tasked to demonstrate
how they love and appreciate the love and wisdom they acquire from their mothers through the following: a
song, letter writing, and photo in a frame. Five (5) minutes will be given to the class to finish the task.

IV. Evaluation
Infer who among the characters of the selection “The Story of the Aged Mother” stated the following
dialogues.
1. “Let not thine eyes be blinded. The mountain road is full of dangers. Look carefully and follow the path
which holds the piles of twigs. They will guide you to the familiar way farther down”.
2. “The entire province will be given strict orders to immediately put to death all the aged people”.
3. “I will consider it as the kindest mode of death”.
4. “Oh, thy kindness thrusts my heart! I will not leave thee. Together we will follow the path of twigs, and
together we will die”.

nights”.

V. Assignment
Think of your own mother and ponder on the words of wisdom you gained from her. Write your
acquired wisdom and reflect how it changed you to be a better person. Be able to come up with a creative
output.

VII. Reflection
Collaboration is evident and effective during the delivery of the lesson. The students are seen to be
very cooperative in the learning process. Through giving activities, they had more time to explore and
discover the task given which allows them to make their presentations creative. Allowing them to think of
their own strategies on how to present their activity shows their thorough understanding of the of the lesson
that also enhances their creativity. Yet the guidance of the teacher is very much needed.
