Clarifying the technology:
Ultraviolet light used as a disinfectant application method but does not oxidize at all. If you
want both disinfection and oxidation than ozone would be use.
There is a great deal of understanding about UV since ultraviolet light can be used to do
different things at specific wavelengths within the invisible light spectrum. At wavelengths
between 220-280 nanometers, UV acts as a disinfectant and is generally referred to as "UV-C".
The optimum wavelength for UV-C is 254nm. Ultraviolet light at wavelengths between 180-
220nm is called "UV-V" and interacts with atmospheric oxygen (O2) to produce relatively low
concentrations of ozone (O3). The optimal wavelength for UV-V is 185nm. (see below)
UV-C destroys pathogens as certified by the National Sanitation Foundation and American
National Standards Institute (NSF/ANSI) under Standard 50, Chapter 14 as a disinfectant by
reducing pathogenic populations by at least a 3-log (99.9%) rate on a single pass. Ozone
qualifies as well under Standard 50, Chapter 13.
UV-C inactivates contaminants by breaking their molecular bonds and rearranging them
through a process called photolysis. UV-C alters the RNA/DNA helix structure within the
Thymine/Adenine dimer and disables the organism from replicating. Therefore, it dies before it
is able to reproduce itself. (see below).

Ozone Principal
Ozone destroys pathogens by ripping electrons from them and breaking their cellular walls in a
process called oxidation. Ozone also destroys organic and inorganic contaminants through the
same electron-ripping process and breaks them down to their base elements. Ozone is
extremely powerful and the reaction is virtually instantaneous. This process of ripping electrons
stabilizes the ozone molecule and converts it back to regular O2. This give-and-take process is
also referred to as reduction/oxidation or redox for short.

Technologically heavier concentrations of ozone are created via a method involving an
electrical arc that converts O2 to ozone and is generally referred to as the corona discharge
method. This is by far the better way to make and use ozone as a disinfectant. This modern
commercial applications of ozone are done via the corona discharge method.
In the technologically considered view, UV-C is a probably a more practical choice for simplicity
of application, concerned with oxidation and are wanting to use it as a surface or air
disinfectant. Conversely, ozone is the better choice when needing to disinfect application
(where oxidation is critical), and is applied in a more contained environment (such as
Documents, Money, Cloth, Lather, Shoes, Plastic, Foods, Frouts, swimming pool, Water Tank
ext.)
