Table of Archetypes found in “Coraline”

1. Coraline The Hero Archetype An image of overcoming obstacles,


monsters, achieving goals and the
protector of others.

When Coralline return to the real


word, she found out that The
Beldam trapped her parents in a
snow globe. Again she returns to
the other world and challenges the
Beldam. She must find her parents
and the eyes of the three ghost
children in order for them to get
back home.

2. The Beldam The Trickster Archetype Poltergeist, con man, and an image
of mischievousness,
unexpectedness and amorality.

The Beldam only created a world


what she knew would impress
Coraline. The Beldam want
something to love, something that
isn’t her and something to love to
eat. She lures Coraline with the
perfect world she created and said
she could only stay there if she let
The Beldam sew her eyes and let
her love her. Whereas it is totally
the opposite, if Coraline let The
Beldam sew her eyes, The Beldam
will eat her just like what she did to
the three ghost children.

3. The Black Cat The Wise Animal Archetype Represents knowledge, wisdom,
reflection, insight, cleverness,
goodwill and readiness to help.
Always appears when the hero is in
a hopeless and desperate situation.

The black cat can talk in the other


world. The black cat was the one
who explain Coraline what is the
true intention of the other mother
to her. The black cat also helped
Coraline in saving her parents and
in getting the third eye of the ghost
children when Coraline failed to do
it.

4. Misses Forcible and Spink The Mentor Archetype Train and counsel the initiates

Misses Forcible and Spink gave


Coraline information, advice and
the seeing stone that will help her
rescue her parents and the three
ghost children.

5. Wybie Lovat The Sidekick Archetype Faithful and supportive confidante


of the hero

Wybie doesn’t believe Coraline


when she said to him that there is
another world until he gets
dragged into it. He also saved
Coraline from being drag into the
well by the arm of the Beldam.

6. The Gardens in both the The Garden Archetype Paradise, innocence, and unspoiled
real and other world beauty

The gardens in both the real and


other world are much like
Coraline’s character. The garden in
the other world was full of colors
, and filled with life much like where
Coraline can freely express herself.
While the garden in the real world
was so dull also much like Coraline
when she is in the real world no
one’s paying attention to her.

7. The color of Coraline’s The Yellow Archetype Depicts hope and happiness.
Raincoat Positive associations with the sun.
As long as the sun shines, there is a
hope for a new beginning

Coralline is an adventurous and an


outgoing character. She can freely
express herself in to the other
world. Coraline also was able to
save her parents and the three
ghost children and defeated the
Beldam. She returns to the real
world with her parents and start a
new beginning along with their
neighbors in the Pink Palace
Apartment.

8. Mel Jones The Good Mother Archetype Associated with the life principle,
birth, warmth and nourishment

Mel Jones is the mother of Coraline


who focuses on her work. Coralline
may not notice the care of her
mother to her at first, but later on
she realizes the value of her
parents and still want them to be
her home.

9. Mr. Bobinsky The Mediator Archetype The go-between, middleman and


saves humanity from violence and
war.

Mr. Bobinsky delivers the message


of the jumping mice to Coraline.
Which was Coraline was warned by
the jumping mice that she should
not enter a tiny door.

10. The Circus Mice The Serpent Archetype Symbolizes energy, full force,
mystery and wisdom

The circus mice have the mystery


vibe, because Mr. Bobinsky would
not let Coraline see them. Mr.
Bobinsky also told a warning to
Coraline on the behalf of the circus
mise that she should not cross a
little door.

11. The Souls of the Three The White Archetype Light, purity, innocence, death, and
Children the blinding truth of an inscrutable
cosmic mystery.

The souls of the three children was


the victims of the Beldam. The
Beldam also created a world to lure
them and let the Beldam sew
buttons on their eyes and promised
to love them without knowing the
truth which is the Beldam just want
to eat them for her energy. The
souls of the three children warn
Coraline about the true intention of
the Beldam and what the Beldam
did to them.

12. The Seeing Stone The Magic Weapon Archetype The hero has the ability to use this
to be successful in the quest.

The seeing stone was given by


Misses Forcible and Spink to
Coraline which will she needed to
defeat the Beldam. Coraline was
able to find the eyes of the three
ghost children with the seeing
stone.
