The document discusses a thesis proposal that examines using edible wrappers as an alternative to plastic candy wrappers. It presents the problem statement, which is to avoid pollution caused by improper disposal of plastic wrappers. The hypothesis is that edible wrappers will be safe when disposed improperly. If conducted, the study would observe edible wrappers over time to see how long it takes for them to decompose compared to plastic wrappers. Related literature discusses edible films and coatings that can be used as food wrappers.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM: RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Candies are popular dessert and sweet food, it is commonly eaten by kids

who doesn’t know how to dispose their garbage properly. Plastics are potentially the

most harmful waste material thrown out in open.

Throwing garbage improperly will cause pollution that is extremely

dangerous to all living organisms.Large piles of trash, particularly with a lot of

wrappers, can cause fires to spread.Litter is deadly to wildlife, especially marine

animals. Street litter washes into storm drains, into our waterways and ultimately

ends up in the ocean. Some of this litter washes back up onto beaches. Some stays in

the water, where it can kill wildlife. The edible wrapper is healthy to our body

because it has vegetable flavour. The edible wrapper will either be thrown away or

eaten. If it’s thrown away it will decompose or dissolve in water.

The edible wrapper is made of glycerol. This edible wrapper is designed to

avoid pollution that can harm people, animals, trees, etc.

Statement of the Problem

Generally the research aims to use edible wrapper as an alternative, instead of

using plastic wrapperthat is inedible and harmful to living organisms when disposed

improperly.

Hypotheses of the Study

Ho1:The edible wrapperas acandy wrapper will not be safe when disposed

improperly

Ha1: The edible wrapper as acandy wrapper will be safe when disposed

improperly

Significance of the Study

This study will benefit the following:

Street sweepers. The result of this study will minimize the time of cleaning

because the wrapper dissolve in water.

Manufacturers. The result of this study will help manufacturers by selling

candies with the edible wrapper to the market.

Animals. The result of this study will help animals by eating this healthy

candy wrapper.
Scope and Delimitations of the Study

The study will be conducted to test the effectiveness of the edible wrapper.

The study will be conducted on a span of 2 weeks or longer. The edible wrapper will

also be observed daily to test how many days before it decompose.

Definition of Terms

These are words that are needed to be defined for further understanding.

Candy. a sweet food made with sugar combined with fruit and chocolate.

Decompose. to break down or be broken down into simpler parts.

Dissolve. is defines as to become broken up or absorbed by something.

Edible. fit to be eaten.

Plastics. a synthetic material made from a wide range of organic polymers.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter provides laws, investigations and studies already presented and

conducted to which the present study is related or has some bearing, similarity or

difference. It includes the legal bases, literatures and studies.

Related Legal Bases

RANo. 10611,alsoknown as the “Food Safety Act of 2013” It is an act to

strengthen the food safety regulatory system in the country to protect consumer

health and facilitate market access of local foods and food products, and for other

purposes.

Republic Act No. 8485, also known as "The Animal Welfare Act of

1998"It is the purpose of this Act to protect and promote the welfare of all animals in

the Philippines by supervising and regulating the establishment and operations of all

facilities utilized for breeding, maintaining, keeping, treating or training of all

animals either as objects of trade or as household pets. For purposes of this Act, pet

animal shall include birds.

Republic Act No. 7394, also knownas the "Consumer Act of the Philippines"It

is the policy of the State to protect the interests of the consumer, promote his general welfare

and to establish standards of conduct for business and industry.

Related Literature

Edible film is defined as thin, continuous or unbroken sheets made up of

edible substances (Balasubramaniam, Chinnan, Mallikarjunan& Philips, 2007;

Guilbert, Cuq&Gontard, 1997). They are excellent alternative to conventional plastic

or even biodegradable plastic in different industries. Natural polymers like lipids and

protein are used to produce the environmental friendly edible films. They can be

made of soy or milk protein molecules too (Eagle, 2004). These films can be placed

in between food element, act as a food wrapper and a pocket to hold food

(Hernandez-Izquierdo&Krochta, 2008). Besides, they prevent oxygen absorption,

offer physical protection and act as a substitute for plastics in wrapping materials.

For a broader variety of application in the industries, antioxidant and flavors

can be added.

Research groups and the food and pharmaceutical industries recognize edible

packaging as a useful alternative or addition to conventional packaging to reduce

waste and to create novel applications for improving product stability, quality,

safety, variety, and convenience for consumers. Recent studies have explored the

ability of biopolymer-based food packaging materials to carry and control-release

active compounds. As diverse edible packaging materials derived from various by-

products or waste from food industry are being developed, the dry thermoplastic

process is advancing rapidly as a feasible commercial edible packaging

manufacturing process. The employment of nanocomposite concepts to edible

packaging materials promises to improve barrier and mechanical properties and

facilitate effective incorporation of bioactive ingredients and other designed

functions. In addition to the need for a more fundamental understanding to enable

design to desired specifications, edible packaging has to overcome challenges such

as regulatory requirements, consumer acceptance, and scaling-up research concepts

to commercial applications.

Related Studies

According to Jung H. Han in his research entitled Edible Films and

Coatings, Edible films and coatings are produced from edible biopolymers and food-

grade additives. Film-forming biopolymers can be proteins, polysaccharides

(carbohydrates and gums), lipids, or a mixture of these Gennadios et al., 1997 (see

Figure 9.1). Plasticizers and other additives are combined with the film-forming

biopolymers to modify the physical properties or other functionality of the edible

films. Biopolymers have multiple film-forming mechanisms, including

intermolecular forces such as covalent bonds (e.g., disulfide bonds and crosslinking)

and electrostatic, hydrophobic, or ionic interactions. For the resulting films or

coatings to be edible, the film-forming mechanism involved in fabrication should be

an appropriate food process—namely, pH modification, salt addition, heating,

enzymatic modification, drying, use of food-grade solvents, or reactions with other

food-grade chemicals. The control of fabrication process conditions is very important

because the changes in treatment conditions can alter kinetics and reaction

mechanisms (Guilbert et al., 1996, 1997).

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, the ingredients and materials,

procedures, sampling designs, population sampling, data gathering instrument, and

statistical treatment of data and the tools that were used for data analysis.

Research Design

This study used the single-group design. The independent variable was the

amount of glycerol as an additive in making the edible candy wrapper. While the

dependent variable is the use of edible wrapper as a candy wrapper in terms of its

smell and taste.

Population and Sampling

In this study Unrestricted Random Sampling was used. Because this type of

sampling is the best for this study due to every member of population has their equal

chance of being involved as and there is no restricted impose. The researcher will get

15 SSC students of Ilocos Norte National High School in the Special Science Class

program. In which each of the respondents will be given a product to try, test, and

observe the effectiveness in terms of its smell and taste.

Procedure

Table 1. Specified Amount of Ingredients Added per Treatment

Treatments Amount of Glycerin Amount of Gelatin

1. 400mL of Cold Water

2. 25g of Gelatin (Powdered)

3. 5.5mL of Glycerin

4. 25x10cm/4 inch flat lids

5. Saucepan

B. Making the Edible Candy Wrapper

1. To start, pour the water into a small saucepan.

2. Sprinkle the gelatin over the surface of the water.

3. Add the glycerin.

4. Place the saucepan in top of the stove and heat the saucepan in low heat.

(Don’t allow the mixture to boil)

5. Stir the gelatin until the gelatin is completely dissolved.

6. Turn off the stove.

7. Arrange your lids(anything circular and flat with a slight ridge around the

edge) in the work surface

8. Spoon 15mm of the gelatin mixture into the lids.

9. Wait for the wrappers to dry until the edges starts to lift up.

10. Once the edges are starting to lift. Insert a toothpick or thin skewer under

the edge of the thin film and run around the edge to lift it from the lids.

C. Placing the candy in the edible wrapper

1. Place the candy in top of the flat edible wrapper.

2. Twist and crimp the ends using your fingernails to compress the twisted

part closet to the candy.

Data Gathering Instrument

The data gathering instrument used in the study was checklist. It was used as

basis in scoring the final product. Each respondent was given one where he/she

evaluated the use of edible wrapper as a candy wrapper in terms of smell and taste.

The products were rated using 9 Point Hedonic scale.
