Presentation: Waterfront Landscape

The Buffalo Bayou Park in Houston, Texas transformed a formerly polluted and neglected waterfront area into a 169-acre linear park. As the park follows the path of the Buffalo Bayou waterway, it had to address issues of flooding and incorporate infrastructure to manage stormwater. The design created different areas for activities like gardens, trails, and an amphitheater, while using bridges and elevated paths to provide access throughout the park and connect surrounding neighborhoods even during floods. Native plantings and a focus on the natural water features has helped clean up the waterway while providing a new recreational asset for the community.

BUFFALO BAYOU PARK PLANNING AND DESIGN
“INFRASTRUCTURE YOU CAN LIVE WITH”
After Tropical Storm Allison (2001) - Water course was
redesigned with study of bayou’s “fluvial geomorphology”

Menders restored with “flood benches”

Sunken areas restored as wetlands

Hardy and submersible materials used e.g. stout

rectilinear shade pavilions of concrete board, precast
concrete light poles, oversized handrails, concrete filled
galvanized steel bridge abutments

Trash cans with foundations anchored far below the

surface to prevent from washing away

Expensive dog park’s water features are filtered through a

recirculating system intended to incorporate a nearby
man made wetland.

BUFFALO BAYOU PARK CHALLENGES
“INFRASTRUCTURE YOU CAN LIVE WITH”

Though site was in middle of the city, utilities had never been extended into the
park : problem when siting lights, drinking fountains & accommodations.

Mucky soils ill suited for structures : airy footbridges sit on concrete pilings
drilled up to 70 ft into the earth.

LEDs short circuit when plunged into muddy water still happens despite
countermeasures like mounting electric equipments within water resistant
fixtures atop the poles and water sensors that cut off electricity during floods.

Mitigating erosion and stabilizing channel & slopes required additional
