This document summarizes an article about the real Hawthorne effect and discusses lessons that can be learned from the Hawthorne studies. The Hawthorne effect refers to increased productivity or motivation from employees that results simply from being observed, rather than changes in work conditions. While the Hawthorne studies have received criticism, they highlighted the importance of considering employees' perspectives and making them feel appreciated and connected. As an HR manager, focusing on employee involvement, attention, care, and addressing their needs can encourage improved performance, as workers will feel more valued and motivated, similar to how productivity increased in the Hawthorne experiments simply from receiving attention.

The Real “Hawthrone Effect”

By: Augustine Brannigan and William Zwerman

A Journal Synthesis on Management Philosophy Topics

By: Zoe Regina C. Castro

Submitted to: Dr. Joanne J. Java, CPA

Over the decades ever since Hawthrone studies was published, it received positive and
negative reputation. Business of today experienced different challenges exploring the effects of
various work condition on morale and productivity. The article depicts an evaluation between
the Hawthorne conclusions and the Hawthorne evidence which shows these conclusions to be
almost wholly unsupported. Many researchers scrutinized and gave their views on the
Hawthrone studies and believe that it might still relevant in today’s workplace though for many
it were overstated due to potential flaws in the research and experiments conducted. People
have the tendency to modify their behavior because they know they are being studied. The
Hawthrone effect refers to tendency of employee to work harder and perform better when
they become a participant in an experiment. Furthermore, employees may change their
behavior due to the attention they are receiving from researchers rather than because of any
manipulation of independent variables [ CITATION Che18 \l 13321 ].
Business settings and work conditions change always due to many factors which
consequently, employee’s behavior and characteristics also changes every time. It has always
been a challenge for business to improve the productivity of the employees match to the
organization’s goals. Organizations in era of globalization and advancement, the management
should consider all the aspects of human relations, their well-being as a whole - in order to
achieve the expected productivity or the performance goal of the workforce.
As future HR manager, I have learned from Hawthrone studies that it is also important
to see the business operation from the perceptive of employees and to make them feel more
connected and appreciated. With this, we will be able to enhance the feeling of teamwork and
greater participation in the total success of the business. So, when employees are being
watched and you’ve given their effort the right attention, they tend to be more productive and
motivated.
Furthermore, I believe that being an HR manager is not just managing employees to
boost their productivity but to make them feel that they are an essential part of the business.
Employees appreciated the chance to have involvement into operational decisions. Encouraging
employees to share and take part in making decisions to achieve the common goal of the
business. Thus, paying more attention and care to them and to their needs and concerns make
them feel more appreciated which encourages them to improve their performance. Just like the
Hawthrone experiment, because employees know they being watched and given the attention
they improve their productivity regardless of other changes in the workplace.
