Objectives:
At the end of the period, learners should be able to:
a. Identify the different electrical hand tools
b. Explain the function and operation of electrical tools and equipment
c. Sustain interest in explaining the uses and function of tools and equipment used in electrical installation and
maintenance d. Classify tools according to its specification, uses and function
Vocabulary:
Electrical - relating to electricity
Materials – consumable Tool kit - a small bag or box equipped with hand tools.
Hand Tools – is anything that is held in the hand or hands to assist a person in doing manual work.
Splicing – connecting two lengths of conductor, to join ropes or wires by weaving or twisting them together.
Stripping – removing the insulation of connecting wires.
Electrical tasks can be accomplished systematically to save time, effort, and Resources. Most of the work cannot be
done using bare hands. To do the task, electrical tools or equipment are needed to perform the job. This lesson will
discuss the function/use of each tool or equipment used in electrical wiring installations.
driving tool is any tool used to push (drive) another object into the wood. Their general purpose is to connect two
pieces of wood together, or to connect wood to another material.
Screwdrivers – These are used to loosen or tighten screws with slotted heads and come in various sizes and
shapes.
Types of Screwdriver
Standard/Flat Screwdriver- The blade tip is wedge shaped and resembles a negative (- sign. This is used to drive
screws with a single slot head.
Philips Screwdriver- This has a cross tip resembling a positive
(+) sign. This is used to drive screws with cross slot heads.
Stubby Screwdriver- This comes in either standard or Philips
screwdriver with short shank or blade and a shorted handle used to
turn screws in tight spaces where a standard screwdriver cannot
used.
Allen Screwdriver/Wrench- This could be in the shape of screw
driver or a wrench, its function is to drive a screw with
hexagonal slot head.
B. Striking Tools
Hammers - These are tools used in driving or pounding and pulling out nails. They are made of hard steel
plastic, or rubber.
Types of Hammer
         Claw Hammer Mallet (Rubber Head)
         Ballpeen Hammer Sledge Hammer
C. Splicing / Gripping / Holding Tools
Pliers - These tools are made from metal with insulators in the
handle and are used for cutting, twisting, bending, holding, and
gripping wires and cables.
Combination Pliers (Linesman’s Pliers) - This is used for
gripping, holding, and cutting electrical wires and cables and
even small nails. They are usually used by linemen in doing
heavy tasks.
Cutting Pliers - This type of pliers is used for cutting fine, medium, and big and cable.
         Type of Cutting Pliers
a.Side Cutting Pliers b. top cutting pliers/End Cutting
Long Nose Pliers - This is used for cutting and holding fine
wires. This can reach spaces or small openings where other
pliers cannot reach and is also used in making terminal loops
of copper wires.
Wire Stripper - This is a tool
used for stripping or removing
the insulation of connecting
wires ranging from gauge #10 to
gauge #16.
D. Cutting Tools Electrician’s Knife - This is used by linemen to
remove insulation of wire and cables in low and high voltage
transmission lines.
Hacksaw - This tool is used for cutting pipes/conduit and
cables. It is also used for cutting big conductors.
