RI President's Message
John F. Germ, RI President, 2016-17
I am the person I am today because of Rotary. And to be a member of the Rotary family is to
be a part of something much bigger than yourself. It means that you are part of a
worldwide team; together, we have provided extraordinary service to the world.
We are closer than ever to achieving our promise of polio eradication. Through service
projects, we have met the needs of local and global communities. We have developed
strategic partnerships that allow us to work with like-minded organizations and achieve
an even great impact.
Today, our world is depending on us to do even more. Now is the time to capitalize on our
success and to catapult Rotary forward to be an even greater force for good in the world. To
do this, we must work together. Remember that today is the first day of the rest of your life,
and how you spend it is up to you.
I know that, together, we can accomplish great things this year as we continue the tradition
of Rotary Serving Humanity.
Sincerely,
John F. Germ

RI Director's Message
Dr. Manoj Desai
My Dear Friends,
10
RI Theme-2016-17
Rotary has been many things, to many
people, in the last 111 years. Through
Rotary, our members have found
friends, community, and a sense of
purpose; we've forged connections,
advanced our careers, and had
incredible experiences we couldn't have had anywhere else. Every week, in more than 34,000 clubs
around the world, Rotarians come together to talk, laugh, and share ideas. But above all, we come
together for one, overriding goal: service.
Service to humanity has been the cornerstone of Rotary since its earliest days, and has been its main
purpose ever since. I believe that there is no better path to meaningful service today than Rotary
membership; and no organization better placed to make a real and positive difference in our world.
No other organization so effectively brings together committed, capable professionals in a wide
variety of fields, and enables them to achieve ambitious goals. Through Rotary, we have the capacity,
the network, and the knowledge to change the world: the only limits are the ones we place on
ourselves.
Today, our organization is at a critical point: a historic juncture that will determine, in so many ways,
what comes next. Together, we have provided extraordinary service to our world; tomorrow, our
world will depend on us to do even more. Now is the time to capitalize on our success: as we complete
the eradication of polio, and catapult Rotary forward, with determination and enthusiasm, to be an
even greater force for good in the world.
Of the many lessons polio eradication has taught us, one of the most important is also one of the
simplest: that if we want to bring all of Rotary forward, we've all got to be moving in the same
direction. Continuity of leadership, at the club, district, and RI level, is the only way we will flourish,
and achieve our full potential. It is not enough simply to bring in new members and form new clubs:
our goal is not more Rotarians, but more Rotarians who can achieve more good Rotary work, and will
become the Rotary leaders of tomorrow.
Near the end of his life, reflecting on the path that brought him to Rotary, Paul Harris wrote:
“Individual effort may be turned to individual needs, but combined effort should be dedicated to the
service of mankind. The power of combined effort knows no limitation.” He could hardly have
imagined then that one day, more than 1.2 million Rotarians would be combining their efforts, and,
through our Rotary Foundation, their resources, to serve humanity together. And we can only
imagine what great deeds Paul Harris would have expected of such a Rotary! It is our responsibility
to achieve those deeds; as it is our privilege to carry forth the tradition of Rotary Serving Humanity.
Sincerely,
11

Peace—In an effort to educate tomorrow's peacemakers and
ambassadors, up to 110 Rotary World Peace Fellows are sponsored each
year to study at one of the eight universities for International Studies in
peace and conflict resolution. Since 2002, 431 fellows from over 75
countries have participated at a cost of more than $23 million.
International Education — Rotary is the world's largest privately-
funded source of international scholarships. Each year, about 1,000
university students receive Rotary scholarships to study abroad. Rotary
clubs also coordinate a high school-age student exchange program that
has sent nearly 8,000 students abroad for three months to a year.

The 4-way Test
From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical
standards in their professional lives. One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of
business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served
as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24-word
test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives, became the guide for sales, production,
advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this
simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, the 4-Way Test has been translated into more than a
hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions:
“Of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

2. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect.

Founder of Rotary
1868 Paul Percy Harris was born in Racine, Wisconsin, USA, on 19
April.
1871 Paul's father fell on hard times and, for economic reasons, Paul
anzd his older brother Cecil were taken to Wallingford,
Vermont, USA, where they were raised by their paternal
grandparents, for whom Paul maintained a deep love the rest
of his life.
1885 He enrolled at the University of Vermont. He was expelled
PAUL P HARRIS after being wrongly accused of taking part in the hazing of
1868-1947
a freshman. Subsequently, in 1933, the university conferred
on Paul an honorary doctoral degree.
1887 He entered Princeton University, New Jersey.
1888 Paul's grandfather died. Paul left Princeton and took a job with the Sheldon Marble Company.
1889 Paul went to Des Moines, Iowa, where he read law preparatory to entering the law department
of the State University of Iowa in Iowa City.
1890 Paul's grandmother died.
1891 Paul graduated from the law department in June. The graduation address, by an attorney who
was an alumnus of the school, emphasized the value of broadening oneself through travel and
new experiences. Paul resolved to take five years in which to travel and work at various trades
before actually beginning a law practice. He went to San Francisco, where he got a job on the
Chronicle as a reporter. He became close friend with another reporter, Harry Pulliam, who
had from Louisville, Kentucky, and who later in life became president of the National Baseball
League. He and Pulliam decided to work their way around California as fruit pickers and
ended up in Los Angeles, where Paul got a job as a teacher in a business college.
1892 Paul left Los Angeles, went to Denver, Colorado, USA, and joined a theatrical company as an
actor. Later, he got a job as a reporter and then worked on a ranch near Platteville, Colorado.
He moved to Jacksonville, Florida, USA, got a job as night clerk in the St. James Hotel then
became a traveling salesman for a marble and granite concern owned by George W Clark,
who became a good friend of Paul's. Years later, George Clark organized and became the first
president of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville.
1893 In March, Paul went to Washington, D.C., to observe the inauguration of Grover Cleveland as
president of the United States. Subsequently, he went to Louisville, Kentucky. Unable to get a
job, he joined another company and traveled throughout Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and
Virginia, USA. In Norfolk, Virginia, he quit his job as salesman and took a boat to
Philadelphia, where he answered an advertisement for a cattleman by a Baltimore, Maryland,
USA, concern making a shipment to England. He signed on and set sail for England. He
16
stayed in Liverpool and its suburbs briefly before setting sail for the return, disappointed at
not having had the opportunity to see London. He resolved to sign on another ship as soon as
possible to return to England. On return to Baltimore, he took a job on a ship to England.
Finally reaching London, he visited the many historic places. He also spent time in Wales.
Back in the United States, Paul went by train to Chicago to visit the Columbian Exposition. He
was intrigued by Chicago's atmosphere of boldness and vigor, which was to lure him back to
that city when he finally chose to settle down. Leaving Chicago, he moved on to New Orleans,
Louisiana. Caught in a hurricane and tidal wave, he assisted in the rescue operations.
After failing to get a job on a newspaper in New Orleans, he returned to Jacksonville, Florida,
to his old position with the marble and granite company. He was given a territory covering the
southern United States, Cuba, and the Bahama Islands.
1894 A year after going back to Jacksonville, Paul was sent to Europe by the granite and marble
company as a buyer from quarries. He visited all major European countries while there. After
returning to Jacksonville from his European tour, he chose to leave his job with the granite
company, when his friend George Clark made him temporary manager of the New York office
so he could experience life in that city.
1896 Having fulfilled his plan for traveling and broadening himself over a five-year period, Paul
moved to Chicago at the end of February to open a law office. Chicago became his permanent
home, and through the years he maintained a successful law practice.
1900 Paul visited his boyhood scenes in Vermont and became aware of his lack of close friends in his
adopted hometown of Chicago. Back in Chicago, he visited the home of a business friend in
the autumn and, following a walk in which he was introduced to various merchants in the
neighborhood, Paul conceived the idea of a club that could recapture some of the friendly
spirit among businessmen in small communities. He made no attempt, to put his idea into
practice until five years later.
1905 Paul met three young business acquaintances — Silvester Schiele, Gustavus Loehr, and Hiram
Shorey — in Loehr's office and explained his idea of a different kind of businessmen's club,
one in which the various businesses and professions of a community are represented. Rotary
was born from this meeting on 23 February.
1910 Paul met and courted Jean Thomson, a young lass who had immigrated from Scotland, and
married her.
1912 Paul and Jean acquired a home in a suburb of Chicago and named it "Comely Bank" after the
street in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Jean had spent her childhood and youth. This was to be
Paul's home until his death 35 years later.
And Paul maintained his law office for most of the remainder of his life. In fact, his law after
partnership, with which he was associated until 1946, continues to this day in Chicago under
the name of Davis & Cichorski. In addition, office space was maintained for him, as first
president and president emeritus, at the Rotary International World Headquarters in
Chicago. He spent much time traveling and was invited to speak to Rotarians at annual
conventions, district and regional meetings, and other functions.

Strategic Plan
We are leaders who act responsibly and take action to tackle some of the
world's most pressing challenges
Why have a Strategic Plan?
Every organization neds a road map that marks where it wants to be in the future and shows how
to get there. In Rotary's case, annual changes in leadership make this need even greater. The Rotary
Strategic Plan keeps us on track to meet our most important goals while preventing the tendency to
change course when new leaders take office.
In 2009, throusands of Rotarians were asked to weigh in on Rotary's future. The following year, the
Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a strategic plan with three priorities that directly
reflect the Rotarians' responses :
When surveyed another random sample of members in 2012 and again in 2014, Rotarians
continued to express strong support for these three strategic priorities and endorsed the goals
under each priority at a rate of more than 95 percent.

Rotary's strategic plan identifies three strategic priorities supported by 16 goals. They represent
what Rotarians have asked to be done to ensure a strong and vibrant Rotary going into the future.

Polio: Poliomyelitis (polio) is a crippling and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in
parts of the world. The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis in a matter of
hours. It can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five.
Polio Today: Today, there are only two countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild
poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Fewer than 370 polio cases were reported worldwide in 2014,
which is a 99.9% reduction since the I 980s, when the world saw about I ,000 cases per day. If we don't
stay the course, experts say polio could rebound to 10 million cases in the next 40 years.
Challenges: The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to
prevent, due to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict
and cultural barriers. Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks.
Ensuring Success: Additional funding will help to end polio now. Thanks to a new campaign, every
dollar donated to Rotary will be matched 2-to-1, upto $ 35 million a year through 2018, by the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation. These funds help to provide much-needed operational support, medical
personnel, laboratory equipment, and educational materials for health workers and parents.
Governments, corporations and private individuals all play a crucial role in funding.
Polio Plus: Rotary launched its Polio Plus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio
eradication, in 1985. Rotary has contributed more than US$ 1.5 billion and countless volunteer hours
to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary's advocacy efforts have
played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute over $9 billion to the effort.
Global Polio Eradication Initiative: The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a
public-private partnership including Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of
the world. Rotary's focus is advocacy, fund raising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building.
Rotary in Action: More than one million Rotary members have donated their time and personal
resources to end polio. Every year, hundreds of Rotary members work side-by side with health
workers to vaccinate children in polio-affected countries. Rotarians work with partners like UNICEF
to prepare and distribute mass communication tools to share the message with those isolated by
conflict, geography, or poverty. Rotary members also recruit fellow volunteers, assist with
transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support.
'This Close' Campaign. Rotary has a growing roster of public figures and celebrities participating in
the 'This Close' to ending polio" public awareness campaign, including Bill Gates, Archbishop
Desmond Tutu, Archie Panjabi, Jackie Chan, Jack Nicklaus and Psy. These ambassadors help educate

History of The
Rotary Foundation
At the 1917 convention, outgoing RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed to set up an endowment
"for the purpose of doing good in the world."
In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary
International.
In 1929, the Foundation made its first gift of $500 to the International
Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by
Rotarian Edgar F. "Daddy" Allen, later grew into Easter
Seals.
When Rotary founder Paul Harris died in 1947, contributions began pouring in to Rotary
International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.
1965-66 Three programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical
Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary
Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants.
1978 Rotary introduced the Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants. The first 3-H
Grant funded a project to immunize 6 million Philippine children against polio.
1987-88 The first peace forums were held, leading to Rotary Peace Fellowships.
2013 Future Vision : New district, global, and packaged grants enable Rotarians around the
world to respond to the world's greatest needs.
Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, the Foundation has received contributions
totaling more than $1 billion.

LET us destroy the foes to understanding. The three generals in command of
the destructive forces are Suspicion, Jealousy and Fear. Let us stimulate and
encourage the constructive forces and place in their command the three greatest
generals the world has ever known: Faith, Love and Courage.
......THE fittest of today is not he who possesses the longest claws or talons.
It is he who has come into the fullness of recognition of the fact that his success is
dependent upon the success of other men in the community in which he lives; that
the success of the community is dependent upon the success of other communities;
that none is sufficient unto himself; that no man can ever succeed alone.
HE who tries to find the good in others will be rewarded, for others will
surely find the good in him. Of all of earth’s sad and lonesome creatures, the most
hopeless is he who loves not his fellowmen.
PERHAPS dreaming is not so bad if one dreams good dreams and makes them
come true.
SMILES are badges of friendliness. There are plenty of them within you. Do
not hold them captive. Set them free at right times and places and their beneficent
effects will carry to the very gates of eternity.
ROTARIANS frequently ask me, “When you founded Rotary, did you think it
would come to anything like this?” No, I did not in 1905 foresee a worldwide
movement of 6,000 clubs and 300,000 men. When a man plants an unpromising
sapling in the early Springtime, can he be sure that someday here will grow a mighty
tree? Does he not have to reckon on rain and sun - and the smile of Providence? Once
he sees the first bud-ah, then he can begin to dream of shade.
