Teacher Candidate Interview Video
Recording and preparing for the Teacher Candidate Interview video was an overall
positive experience that led to development and growth in several areas related to my
preparedness as a teacher. As has been discussed in other sections throughout this portfolio,
preparation is a vital part of the teaching process, and the Teacher Candidate Interview video
help me gain experience with this through the writing and laying out the content for the
recording. In a lot of ways, there are similarities between preparing for an interview to preparing
for lessons and activities in the classroom. Preparing for an interview is necessary for obtaining a
final product that is of high quality, and the same is true for preparing lessons and assessments in
the classroom. It is important to think ahead of and prepare for possible questions in an
interview, and it is as equally important to anticipate students’ questions and needs. Lastly, just
like in an interview where it is important to dress, and act professionally, it is important to
maintain composure and professionalism in the classroom to show leadership in the classroom
and to model these qualities for students.
The thought and writing process to prepare for the interview helped me develop an
appropriate mindset for when I actually started recording the video. Additionally, getting to use
the Screen Cast O-Matic technology was good practice, and a useful tool for the classroom one
day. Similarly, getting to use a professionally resource like the Weebly Teacher Created Website
made this final product a great long-term resource that I can use in future professional
interactions.
Teacher Candidate Interview Questions & Responses
The following notes were used as thought cues throughout the interview process:
- Briefly share a little about your background experiences that have led you to choose a
career in education.
o Academics, tutoring, youth camp, volunteer teaching assistant
- What have you learned in your teacher training program that will make you an excellent
classroom teacher?
o Classroom management strategies, assessment, differentiated instruction,
culturally responsive teaching, ELL
Field placements, ELED assessment plan, learning segment
Built confidence in preparing and practicing for the EDTPA, and helping
and observing field placement teachers
Knowledge of theorists like Harry Wong and his classroom management
theories
Know to look at student assets and experience when building a lesson plan
(i.e. what book to choose, sample questions to choose, activities I know
my students will like etc.)
- Provide us with an example of a lesson you taught. How did you integrate it with other
curriculum areas, address the CCLS, technology, student engagement and motivation?
What were the results of the lesson?
o Math lesson plan that integrated literacy and writing through a Math Trails
Assignment
o Incorporated math, reading and writing by having students go out and look for
math they see everywhere (i.e. parks, houses, building, road signs etc.), and had
them draw and journal their experience
o Gave them the option to work individually or in pairs
o Use cameras, or ipads to take pictures of what they found
o Gave them different options for how they would like to present their final findings
(PowerPoint, speaking, drawings etc.)
o Being outside kept them engaged in the activity, working with partners builds
teamwork and collaboration, and showing them that math can be fun and is
everywhere we look
- How will your knowledge of the current trends in education inform you as an educator in
our district/board/school?
o Excellent knowledge of technology, scaffolding, and differentiated instruction for
all students and learners
o I would employ specific teaching practices and morals for a particular board I was
interviewing for

o Open to collaboration with other more experienced educators to learn methods
and strategies they have used, and their opinions on current trends
- Why should we hire you instead of the other applicants we have interviewed?
o Young, energetic teacher with unique background, skillset, and extensive
experience working with students of all ages
o Different resources, and tools, and excellent understanding of technology
o Open to new ideas, and excited to collaborate with other teachers
o Willing and wanting to be fully involved in the school, extra curriculars, and
participate in professional development opportunities
o I really not only want to teach, but show students I care for them inside and
outside of the classroom, which I hope will ultimately result in even better
learning experiences for them

Conclusion
As has been noted several times throughout this portfolio, reflection is a vital component
of the teaching process. This Teacher Candidate Interview Video, is similar to a reflection in that
I was able to look at the work completed for this portfolio, and look at my past experiences and
current abilities to try and represent who I am as an educator and why a school board/district or
school should hire me. Ultimately, this video, like the amalgamation of this portfolio, is a
professional representation of myself, the pedagogical practices I have developed, and who I aim
to be as an educator.
