Phrase:

 A phrase is a group of words where subject


and verb don’t exist at the same instance

N̲o̲u̲n̲ P̲h̲r̲a̲se̲ ̲:
 A noun phrase is a group words that acts as a
Noun. It may be a Subject,Object, Complement
of a Verb.
Example:
 My father is a retired person
Here a retired person is used as Complement

Noun phrase may be used as Subject of Verb


Examples :

 To learn English is the demand of the present


age
 Smoking cigarette is a bad habit
 Reading Newspaper is a good habit
 Swimming in the river is dangerous
 His coming here is uncertain
 To learn English is essential

Noun Phrase may be used as Object of


Transitive Verb.

Examples:

 I like to watch games of thrones.


 He wanted to have a cup of tea.
 Dr. Shahidullah was a man of litters
 My mother likes to cook delicious dishes.
 She prefers Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Noun Phrase may be used as Complement of


Subject

Examples :
 John is a boy of his words
 He is a full time worker
 The lion is the king of beasts
 Life is not a bed of roses
 Life is one kind of struggle
Noun Phrase may be used as Object of
Preposition

Examples :
 He is good at reading newspaper
 He is proud of his man and money
 This prize is for the best boy of the class
 I am good of his excellent result
 We could not see him at the time of his arrival

Noun Phrase may be used as Noun in Apposition

Examples:
 Mahbub Shakil,the admin of English Park, is a
sagacious person
 Dhaka,the capital of Bangladesh, is a populous
county
 Ayub Ali,my best friend, is no more
 MR Aniket,principal of Community Model
School(CMS) is a learned person
 Virat Kohli,the Indian Skipper, is the best ODI
batsman in the world

The Structure of Noun Phrase : The noun phrase


is a group of words that ends with Noun

 Possesive + Noun = Noun Phrase


Examples :
 Our Country,His Curiosity, Your Parents, King’s
Evil,God’s Acre,The Lion’s share

 Adjective + Noun = Noun Phrase


Examples :
Poor Children, Rural Woman,Illiterate People, a
good deal,Ardent Spirits, a lunatic asylum,Capital
Punishment, a narrow escape, a burning question

 Article + Adjective + Noun= Noun Phrase

Examples :
A clever boy,An educated mother,the corrupt
politicians

 Article + Adverbd + Adjective + Noun = Noun


Phrase

Examples :
A very honest officer,a nicely decorated house etc
 The + Adjective = Noun Phrase
Examples :
The Poor,The Rich etc

 To + Verb = Noun Phrase


Examples :
 To walk is a good exercise
 To swim is my hobby

 Verb + ing = Noun Phrase

Examples :
 Walking is a good exercise
 Swimming is my hobby

Adjective Phrase: An adjective phrase is a phrase


that works as an adjective for modifying a noun
or pronoun.Adjective can modify noun/pronoun
by placing before/after noun/pronoun
Examples :

 A thing of beauty is a joy forever


 A girl in whit sharis is my cousin
 The fox without a tail call the meeting
 The man walking along the road is a teacher
 The bird flying in the sky has been shot

 Adverb+Adjective =Adjective Phrase


 His speech is highly motivated
 I am extremely sorry
 He is very honest

 Preposition +Adjective =Adjective Phrase


 He saw a lady with red lips
 I want to see a face with smile
 English is a language abounding with idiomatic
expression
 As+Adjective +as+Noun = Adjective Phrase

 He is as clever as a jackal
 The boy is as dull as an ass
 Setu is as stupid as Prova
 Rabinhood is as strong as lion
 The baby is as beautiful as lily

 Noun +Present participle+preposition


+object=Adjective Phrase

 Birds flying in the sky are enjoying freedom


 Farmers working in the field are hopeful
 The man working in the garden is a gardener
 The dog sleeping in the street is dangerous

 Noun +Past participle+object =Adjective Phrase

 I saw the sky covered with clouds


 The crops damaged by flood greatly harm
 A saint absorbed in meditation acts condemned
by religion

 Noun+Infinitive +object /Adverb=Adjective


Phrase

 He hopes to defeat successfully


 The boy desires to success in life
 The killer attempts to murder the man

Adverb Phrase: An adverb phrase is a group of


words that acts as an adverb.It generally modify a
verb,an adjective or another adverb by denoting
manner,place or time.

If we ask the verb with When,Where,How, Why,


the answer will be Adjective.
He didn’t came school because of his illness(Ask
the verb with why)

He behaved rudely (এখানে rudely adverb কেন না


এটি ক্রিয়া সম্পন্ন হওয়ার ধরণ কে নির্দে শ করেছে।
কিন্ত একটি মাত্র word তাই এটি ‍adverb । এই adverb
এর স্থলে in a rude manner একই অর্থ দেয় । অর্থাৎ
adverb এর কাজ করে।

Examples :
 Manner:
 Carefully = With Care
 Bravely = in a bravely manner/with bravely
 Carelessly =Without any care
 Attentively = with attention
 Quickly = with great speed

 Place:
 Here = at this place/on this spot
 There = at that place/ on that spot
 Away = to another place

Time:
 Now = at this very moment
 then = at that moment /time
 soon = before very long/at an early date
 recently=at present /at a recent date

 Salma is coming now


 Salma is coming at this very moment
 The arrow is fall here
 The arrow is fall at this place
 He runs quickly
 He runs with great speed

Structure of Adverb Phrase :


 Adverb+and+ Adverb = Adverbial phrase.
Examples:
 He is out and out (পুরোপুরি) a gentle man
 He tried heart and soul.
 He did the thief black and blue
 The crow looked to and fro
 He help me few and far between.

 Every+time (time indicator noun) =Adverbial


Phrase
Examples:
 He comes to visit us every month
 He works in the park every morning
 Every year, he gets the first prize
Adverbial phrase of time: Indicates when the task
has been completed or done
Examples :
 The sinner will suffer in the long run.
 He is coming in a minute.
 Our class begins in November.( Here, in
November =adverbial phrase.)
Adverbial phrase of manner :Indicates how the
task has been completed or done.
Example:
 Shihabul ran at a great speed.
 I told him the matter in a polite way.
Adverbial Phrase of Cause and Purpose: Indicates
intention, reason and result
Example :
 We read more and more to make a good result.
 Rubina sold her hair to buy a gift
 He shed tears to see the sufferings of the poor.

Prepositional Phrases : Prepositional Phrase is a


group of words that starts with preposition and
end with preposition as well

Examples :
 The school is in fornt of my house.
