                            0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution.
on 23 September 1976, after the draft finalized by the Illuminating
Engineering Sectional Committee had been approved by the Electro-
technical Division Council.
0.2 As a result of the extensive development of petrochemical industries,
need has been felt for formulation of Indian Standards for electrical
apparatus with type of protection ‘e’ in order to provide guidance to
manufacturers and approving authorities of these equipment in the
country. As a first step IS : 6381-1972* was published to cover general
requirements of such apparatus. This standard is intended to supplement
it with additional details as far as lighting fittings are concerned.
0.3 In preparing this standard, assistance has been derived from B. S.
4533 : Part 2 : 1969 ‘Electric lighting fittings, details requirements,
Section 2 : 1 Lighting fittings for division 2 areas’, issued by the British
Standards Institution.
0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,
expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with
IS : 2-1960t. The number of significant places retained in the rounded
off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard specifies requirements and tests for electric lighting
fittings for use in Division 2 areas as defined in IS : 5572 ( Part I )-1970:.
The fittings operate with either tungsten filament or electric discharge
lamps ( other than low pressure sodium vapour lamps ) on supply voltages
not exceeding 250 V.

1.2 This standard does not cover portable electric lighting fittings.
2. TERMINOLOGY
2.0 For the purpose of this standard, the following definitions shall apply.
2.2 Auxiliary Gear - Those items of control gear which are required
for the starting and operation of discharge lamps, for power factor
correction or radio interference suppression.
3.1 General
3.1.1 A complete fitting may comprise a restricted breathing enclosure,
an unrestricted breathing enclosure, or a combination of both. The
lamp shall be totally enclosed.

3.3.3 In the measurement of creepage distance and clearances, joints
in composite bodies shall, in general, be regarded as creepage distances
even when they are stuck together or filled up.
3.3.6 The length of joints not sealed shall not be included when
,calculating the creepage distance unless all the parts between which they
run consist of ceramic insulating materials.

7. SURFACE TEMPERATURE-RISE
7.1 In general, the design and construction of the fitting shall be such
that in normal conditions of use, the maximum temperature of any part
of the external surface of a restricted breathing fitting does not exceed
200°C. For an unrestricted breathing fitting, the maximum temperature
of any part of any internal or external surface of the fitting or of the
external surface of the lamp shall not exceed ‘200°C.
7.2 For fittings for use in areas where gases or vapours having ignition
temperatures below 200°C may occur, attention is drawn to Appendix A.
