LETTER OF COMPLAINT- BPP’S INCOMING STUDENTS

3rd September 2020

Dear Mr A. Chadwick (Dean of BPP University Law School),

I am writing to you on behalf of myself and other students (see signatories below). As part of the
full time incoming PGDL/LLM students starting our Induction Week on 7th September 2020 and
part time incoming PGDL/LLM students starting their Induction on 5th September 2020, we are
extremely disappointed and feel let down by BPP University already.

It is four days until the beginning of our course for full-time students and two days for part-time
students, yet there are three things which already hinder us from making the most of our
programme:

1. It is Thursday 3rd September and we have not received any form of timetable or
scheduling for the upcoming week, let alone the upcoming term. This is very worrying, as
it seems to point to an education institution that is not on top of its organisation. Many of
us have other, prior commitments, and it is impossible to plan ahead with absolutely no
indication to our timetable next week or this weekend. Only a few students have
received emails regarding the induction week, which is unacceptable.
2. Many students still have absolutely no access to the Hub and BPP Adapt, rendering it
impossible for them to prepare for the upcoming workshops during Induction Week.
Some tasks are due for Monday 7th September and students will immediately be behind
due to lack of access and due to the intense nature of the course, may add undue
stress.
3. Despite the extortionate fees students are paying to BPP, we have been categorically
told we will not receive hardcopies of our study materials. Although we are assured all of
the material will be accessible online, this is in direct opposition to the understanding of
many prospective students, who chose the PGDL course with BPP based on the
promise that hard copies of course material will be provided. In the programme
handbook, it is stated that hard copies are available on request; however, this is untrue.
Only those with access to learning support are able to request hardcopies and even then
are not having their requests fulfilled as the Head of Programme and Head of Learning
Support are only administering them to those in exceptional circumstances and only
under the specific recommendation of a clinician, despite having previous
medical/learning support documentation. The cost of getting a recommendation from a
clinician is £30, a fee some students may not be able to afford, and as promised
hardcopies of materials, it is unfair and to some extent discriminatory.

Given the amount of reading that is required before the Induction Week’s workshops, how does
BPP expect those students who still have no access to the material, neither online nor hard
copies to not fall behind?

Needless to say, this incompetence has caused much worry and anxiety to many of your
students already, before the term has even begun. From a university to whom their students’
mental wellbeing has been evidently important (see image 1), this feels like a terrible letdown.
BPP University intends to start induction week with a lecture on “wellbeing” so this situation is
completely unacceptable.

As you are aware, we are living in the age of uncertainty. Most of us students have chosen BPP
for the face-to-face element. We understand that under current government guidelines this is
not possible. However, since we are missing out on this vital part of the course for which we are
paying for, providing students with a timetable with a reasonable notice before term starts and
providing all students with hard copies of all material is the very least BPP University can and
should do.

Sincerely,

Incoming BPP PGDL/LLM Students
