Esp Course Design

This document discusses the design of an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course focused on painters. It begins by defining ESP and noting that ESP courses teach English for occupational purposes. It then discusses the definition and job description of a painter, including preparing surfaces, mixing and applying paints, and communicating with clients. The document recommends that painters need English language skills to communicate with foreign partners and clients, understand vocabulary related to their work, and speak English fluently on the job. The ESP course would help painters improve their English abilities for their painting careers.

CHAPTER I

English Specific purposes (Dudley- Evans,1997) absolute characteristics:

a. ESP is defined to meet specific needs of the learners.
b. ESP makes use of underlying methodology and activities of the discipline it
serves.
c. ESP is centered on the language appropriate to these activities in terms of
grammar, lexis, register, study skills, discourse and genre.

Variable characteristics

a. ESP may be related to or designed for specific disciplines

b. ESP may use, in specific teaching situations, a different methodology from that
general English
c. ESP is likely to be designed for adult learners, either at a tertiary level institution
or in a professional work situation. It could, however, be for learners at secondary
school level
d. ESP is generally designed for intermediate or advanced students.
e. Most ESP courses assume some basic knowledge of the language systems.

From that we know that ESP is English as a foreign language. Refers to teaching the
English language to university students or people already in employment. There are two
kinds of ESP. There are English academic purposes and English occupational purposes. In
this paper focus for the English occupational purposes. English occupational purposes(EOP)
refers to the specific ways English is used in different work and professional situation. In this
paper talking about EOP for Artist.

Although communication in the field of art may be mainly characterized as visual

(since it is centered around image), it is nonetheless true that in this post-(post)modern era
there must be some linguistic form of communication both amongst art specialists, on the one
hand, and between them and the audiences/public, on the other. A number of genres have
been devised for this purpose, with specific structures and specific discourse strategies.
Probably the most important strategy refers to the linguistic (and extra linguistic) choices for
interpreting art. Our concern is here with some aspects of the specific English language put to
work for interpreting art and with how these aspects may be dealt with in classroom
procedure.

Why should anyone think and, even more, speak and write about art? One common
sense reason would be simply, because it is there. It surround us, not necessarily in the
classical sense of the word Art – that is, “Fine Art” but in its postmodernist meaning, as part
of our reality. The traditional roles attributed to the artist, therefore to Art, refer to such things
as recording the world and representing it (the artist-reporter); giving form/image to ideas,
philosophies, feelings (the artist who experiences); revealing truths which are not easy to
reach due to their hidden or universal nature (the artist-analyst); helping people to look at the
world in a new, innovative way, never thought of before (the activist artist.) Thus, our way of
perceiving reality is influenced by the way it is mediated by art and artists. We shall endow
ourselves with a much more complex understanding of things than we might think, if we
allow ourselves to dive into the looking glass which is placed by art in front of our eyes.

We have adopted so far the point of view of the art public (or art audience.) There are
other points of view from which thinking and writing about art are performed. There is the
point of view of art criticism and there is also the point of view of the artist himself/herself.

2.1. Definition

According Wikipedia art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual,

auditory or performing artifacts (artworks), expressing the author's imaginative, conceptual
ideas, or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. Other
activities related to the production of works of art include the criticism of art, the study of the
history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination [clarification needed] of art. The three classical
branches of art are painting, sculpture and architecture music, theatre, film, dance, and other
performing arts, as well as literature and other media such as interactive media, are included
in a broader definition of the arts. Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery
and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences. In modern usage after the 17th century,
where aesthetic considerations are paramount, the fine arts are separated and distinguished
from acquired skills in general, such as the decorative or applied arts. Though the definition
of what constitutes art is disputed and has changed over time, general descriptions mention an
idea of imaginative or technical skill stemming from human agency and creation. The nature
of art and related concepts, such as creativity and interpretation, are explored in a branch of
philosophy known as aesthetics.

An Artist is a person engaged in an activity related to creating art, practicing the arts,
or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse
is a practitioner in the visual arts only. The term is often used in the entertainment business,
especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (less often for actors).
"Artiste" (the French for artist) is a variant used in English only in this context; this use is
becoming rare. Use of the term to describe writers, for example, is valid, but less common,
and mostly restricted to contexts like criticism.
