ADVANCED ART Syllabus
Advanced art classes are designed to give students with the desire a place to enhance their skills and creative mind
in specific areas of art. Awareness and sensitivity to the arts place in our society and your life will be explored. Projects are presented
in the creative problem solving style where students can use their personal expression and the techniques studied to produce an
individual, personalized work of art. Students will also continue to evaluate their own and other works of art.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:

1. To create meaningful works of art with personal value and pride (not just for a grade) using various techniques, media, and art
making processes.
2. To develop critical thinking skills that enable students to analyze our visual world from distinct perspectives.
3. To develop problem solving skills that enable students to become innovators.
4. To gain understanding of the importance and prevalence of art in all cultures, past and present.

2020 - Let me just start by saying we are doing our best to make the best of a worst case
scenario. I want you to have everything that you need this year and will work hard to find any
way possible to make year fulfilling for all of you. Please be patient with everyone!

MATERIALS:
Each student will be responsible purchase a set of generic disposable type materials. You will need to have your kit in
class with you at all times. (see attached sheet for Art Kit prices) however you do not have to keep them in the classroom as I cannot
guarantee their security. If you are going to have any problems getting this kit please talk to me, we have ways to help.
Outside of the kit students will need to provide #2 pencils and have a place available to use in their all class binder.
If at any time you check out materials/equipment from the department you are expected to return in it in its original condition.
Damage to school property will result in a fine being assessed to cover its replacement cost.

BEHAVIOR:
Art is a studio class; therefore students are moving about all the time and working with lots of different things. Because of this
atmosphere, it is imperative for your safety and productivity that we all behave in a proper manner. I expect each student to:
 Follow directions and procedures the first time they are given.
 Respect the teacher, your classmates, all materials and property, and all school rules.
(includes cleaning up after yourself!)
 Be in your seat, quiet and ready to learn, before the bell rings.
 Be prepared – have the necessary supplies and materials
 Stay focused and on task- use your time wisely, participate in class, have purposeful

 Use appropriate classroom language (no vulgarity or profanity). *Warning
 Do not: misuse, abuse, destroy, or play with supplies or equipment. *Detention and/or Parent Contact
 No food, drink, or gum around project. *Parent Conference & Referral
*Suspension from Class

My Motto on Talking: Show me you can talk and work at the same time or you won’t be allowed to talk.

PARTICIPATION :
Each student will be given a calendar for each 6 weeks. The calendar is part of their participation points for the class. The
calendar will be turned back in at the end of the 6 weeks for a grade. Points are taken from the calendar grade if the student is absent,
not participating or behaving poorly. I will keep track of deducted points in my daily grade book.
Each student is given 3 restroom passes per calendar, the must present me with the original calendar I give them at the
time that they want the pass. If the original calendar is lost, students can get a new calendar but it is not eligible for passes. Calendars
will be turned at the end of the 6 weeks with homework and deadlines written on them.

ATTENDENCE:
Because art is a studio class and most all of the work will be done in the classroom, it is necessary
to maintain regular attendance for success. It is the student’s responsibility to check for assignments
missed due to absences. If extra time is needed, students can make arrangements to come in after school.

TARDY POLICY:
If you are late to my class, you will be assigned a tardy and consequences per school policy. I do allow students
to use their calendar passes for their tardiness as long as you arrive with 5 minutes of the start of the period, If they have
a pass available to give me.
If you are late to my class you are not eligible for privileges (restroom passes) that day.

SKETCH BOOK:
Students are required to keep and use a sketchbook in upper level courses. I will be grading the sketchbooks every week this
year. It is vital for the creative process that students use this book to work out creative ideas, plan projects, and just record
things from their everyday life. Sketchbooks should be worked on both inside and outside of the classroom.

CLEAN-UP:
Clean up is done in the last 3-5 minutes of class. (unless otherwise directed).
DO NOT CLEAN UP EARLY, IT WILL RESULT IN THE LOSE OF PARTICIPATION POINTS!

ORIGINALITY:
All work must be Original. Students are not allowed to work from published photographs, art works or other copyright
material except as a reference (published does include the internet). Students must move beyond mere duplication in their work. The
work must be significantly altered to represent the student’s individual composition or expression.

All major projects will have a specific rubric based on that project. Students use this rubric to meet the criteria for each project and
attach the rubric to the back of the work. Rubrics are based on the following:
1. Criteria – the standards given for 5. Time on task/effort – uses class
each assignment. While criteria is time wisely and effectively, cleans
