V V XS XS XS X: Wind Load Calculation

This document summarizes the wind load calculation procedure according to BS 6399-2:1997 for a building located in Sri Lanka. Key parameters included the hourly wind speed of 26.2 m/s, an altitude factor of 1.0, a directional factor of 1.0, a seasonal factor of 1.0, and a probability factor of 1.0. Given the effective height was less than 50m and proximity to the sea, the terrain and building factor was 2.0. This resulted in a net wind pressure of 1.9 kN/m^2 and net suction pressure of 1.68 kN/m^2.

WIND LOAD CALCULATION

Code of specification :- BS 6399 - 2: 1997 Code of practice for wind loads

Calculation :-

Wind load calculation is carried out on, focusing the façade areas

Vs = Vb x Sa x Sd x Ss x - BS 6399 - Part2: 1997

(i) Hourly wind speed , Vb

3 second gust wind speed for zone 3 on post disaster condition,

V = 38 m/s
/ - Design
D i off buildings
b ildi for
f high
hi h winds
i d - Sri
S i Lanka
L k

Converting to hourly wind spee Vb = 26.2 m/s

(ii) An Altitude Factor , Sa

Topography is not considered Sa = 1 + 0.001 ∆s

∆s - Site altitude in meters above the mean sea level which is 1.0 m

Sa = 1.0

(iii) Directional Factor , Sd

Conservatively The orientation is ignored , Sd = 1.0
10

(iv) Seasonal Factor , Ss

Permanent Building exposed to the wind continuously for more than 6months ,

Ss = 1.0

(v) Probability Factor , Sp

Sp = 1.0

Hence , Vs = 26.2 m/s

Ve = Vs x Sb
(vi) Terrain and Building Factor , Sb

Effective Height He < 50m

Building site is within 2km from the sea

Sb = 2.0

(vii) Dynamic Pressure , q = 0.613 Ve

(viii) External Pressure Coefficient , Cpe :-

Table 26 :-

Cpe = +0.83 & -0.8

(ix) Internal pressure coefficient , Cpi = +0.2 & -0.3

(x) Net pressure Coefficient , Cp = (Cpe-Cpi)

Cp = -1.0
Cp = +1.13

(xii) Net pressure, Pe = qCp kN/m

Pe - Suction = 1.68 kN/m2
