NAME: JERONY D.
ESICAN
ACTIVITY NUMBER 1
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
I. At the end of the chapter, the students will be able to:
1. Define Science, Technology and Society.
Science, Technology and Society is an interdisciplinary field that studies the conditions under
which the production, distribution and utilization of scientific knowledge and technological
systems occur; the consequences of these activities upon different groups of people.
2. Discuss the reasons for studying Science, Technology and Society.
Technology, Science and knowledge are important in modern contemporary society. Studies
of technology and science provides students with insight into how different processes of
knowledge are initiated and progressed, and how innovative technological processes are
developed, employed and increase in importance. Science and Technology have tremendous
impact on the three leading concerns of most citizens, i.e. the economy, medical well-being
and the military.
3. Discuss historical antecedents in which social considerations changed the course of science
and technology.
HISTORICAL ANTECEDENTS:
A. Ancient Period
Ancient civilization paved the way for advances in science and technology.
These advances during the ancient period allowed civilizations to flourish by finding better
ways of communication, transportation, self-organization and ways of living.
Example:
Ancient wheel – People from ancient civilization used animals as means of
transportation.
The invention of ancient wheel is credited to the Sumerians.
B. Middle Ages
The major advances in scientific and technological development took place in this
period.
These advancements include constant increase if new inventions, innovations in
traditional production and the emergence of scientific thinking and method.
Example:
Heavy Plough – “The heavy plough turned European agriculture an economy on its head.
The fields with heavy, fatty soil became those that gave the grates yields.”
– Prof. Thomas Andersen
- Because of the invention of heavy plough, northern Europe saw rapid economic
prosperity.
C. Modern Ages
Historical period when people realized the importance of the efficiency of
transportation, communication and production.
Industrialization took place but with greater risk on human health, food safety and
environment.
Example:
Telescope – Invented by Galileo Galilei that can magnify 20 times larger than a regular
glass.
- This is used to discover important astronomical discoveries such as craters and
mountains in moon.
So in conclusion, as years passed by, the world is continuing to develop and evolving through
scientific and technological inventions or research advances that will or will not improve the
human life of the next generations in the future.
4. State the effects that influence Science, Technology and Society.
- Science and Technology have had a major impact on society, and their impact is
growing. Especially today, many inventions related to technology are increasing
and it has advantages and disadvantages in the people’s way of living. By making
life easier, science has given man the chance to pursue societal concerns such as
ethics, aesthetics, education, and justice, to create cultures; and to improve
human conditions.
II. Answer the ff. questions.
1. Why study Science and Technology in the context of society?
- Science education has relevance for the learner, since it enables him or her to
understand, in an active way, how the natural world is organized and
interrelated, and how it changes and interacts with the human-designed world.
- Technology is neutral in itself. It is the application by humans that can make it
beneficial or harmful. Decisions about the use of technology have wide-ranging
effects. This factor makes a scientifically literate population crucial in our current
society.
2. Describe the relationship between Science, Technology and Society.
- Without society then there would be no science and technology and that is why
the invention of certain tools and equipment have helped achieve big things.
Society cannot do without the industries we have today. The society needs
science and technology. The creation of computers is work of art by individuals
was a milestone that would come a long way in helping the society. A computer
helps us to leverage ourselves by gaining valuable information that we can use
to enrich our lives. The impact of science and technology can seriously be
recognized. Many people around the world take for example scholars in colleges
and universities have taken the lead examining the relationship between science
and technology.
- The developing world has a long tradition of participatory action research,
popular education and community organization joining up to solve some science
and technology issues that affect the society. How is science and technology
related to society is something that is calling even for the government
intervention. Science and technology related issues are actually been discussed
worldwide today. Progress in this has resulted to the ability to produce diverse
types of material items.
3. How significant is Science and Technology to the society?
- Knowledge Creation and utilization the essence of how science and technology
contributes to society is the creation of new knowledge , and then utilization of
that knowledge to boost the prosperity of human lives, and to solve the various
issues facing society.
4. Which contribution of science is the most important discovery of man? Explain why?
- The internet. It really needs no introduction: the global system of
interconnected computer networks known as the internet is used by billions of
people worldwide. Countless people helped developed it, but the person most
often credited with its invention is the computer scientist Lawrence Roberts.
Internet I think is the most important discovery of man for me because it really
helps people in communication, schools, business etc. Especially now, we are
facing a crisis which is the COVID19 pandemic and internet is most used of
almost all people around the world. It is used for online class, business, and
others. Without internet, I really don’t know how people will connect to each in
this of pandemic.
5. If you will be a scientist, what important contribution would you like to invent? Explain why?
- We all know that our country (Philippines) is prone to natural disasters
especially the typhoons that affecting our country every single year. Up to 20
typhoons are affecting our country annually. So if I will be a scientist, I would
invent an anti-typhoon rocket that stops a typhoon before it hits the land of the
country. This invention was made possible by the time of the late president
Ferdinand Marcos but its operation was stopped by the oppositional
administration by that time. The anti-typhoon rocket targets the eye of a coming
typhoon and it explodes and it destroys the typhoon. If I will become a scientist,
I would invent an upgrade of the invention so that I can save our country from
super typhoons that affecting our country. I’m sure this invention can be my
biggest contribution to our country and for the world.
6. Make a collage that will highlight the impact of science and technology to the society.
