Academia International College: Lab Sheet

This lab sheet describes familiarization with an FTP server. It outlines configuring an email server with SMTP and POP3 enabled on 192.168.1.2. Two users, client1 and client2, were created. A DNS server was configured on 192.168.1.5 to direct the mail.com domain to the email server. Two PCs were configured with IP addresses 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.4 and email accounts client1@mail.com and client2@mail.com respectively. An email was successfully sent from client1 to client2, demonstrating the email transfer protocols working properly.

Theory:
1. E-mail:
E-mail stands for electronic mail. It is a method of transferring e-mail from one person to
another using electronic devices. E-mail system works on the store and forward method. E-mail
servers accept, forward, deliver, and store mails.
2. SMTP:
SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is a communication protocol for electronic
mail transmission. Mail servers and other messaging agents use SMTP to send and receive mails.
3. POP:
POP stands for Post Office Protocol. It is an application layer Internet standard protocol used by
e-mail clients to retrieve e-mail from mail server.

4. IMAP:
IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. It is a Internet Standard Protocol used by
mail servers to retrieve messages on TCP/IP connection.

Network:
Steps:
1. Configuring mail server.

a. Set ip address to 192.168.1.2

b. In email service, Turn on SMTP and POP3.

c. Create the email domain: mail.

d. Add two users:
I. Username: client1 and Password: client#
ii. Username: client2 and Password: client#2
2. Configuring DNS server:

a. set ip address to 192.168.1.5

b. In DNS service, set mail.com domain, “A Record” type and point it to mail server

3. Add a switch
4. Add two clients PC.
5. Set the IP address to PC0: 192.168.1.3 and PC1: 192.168.1.4.
a. Configure email client1@mail.com to PC0 and client2@mail.com to PC1.
6. Send email from client1@mail.com to client2@mail.com.

Result and Findings:

After completing all the above steps then we compose a mail and send from client1 to client2. If all the
steps are done properly then, we can see mail sent by client1 in client2 when we click at receive mail.

Conclusion:

With the help of lab I was able to understand that how all the mail transfer protocol works.
 First, we add a switch with two desktops with ip address of 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.4
respectively.
 The we go to the email service of first desktop
 Then, click to configure email.
 Fill the form with all the information
