La Liga Filipina was a civic organization founded by Jose Rizal in 1892 upon returning to the Philippines from exile. It aimed to promote reforms peacefully through education and mutual aid while gaining independence from Spain. Some members later formed the more radical Katipunan society, seeking armed revolution. Katipunan was established in 1892 and also worked to uplift Filipinos while seeking independence from Spain through revolt. It grew rapidly and attracted many members dissatisfied with the slower approach of La Liga Filipina.
