5. Project Summary
With the introduction of biometric system, things have become more systematic and
hassle free in many walks of life, and maintenance of attendance is also among one of the
positively affect aspects. Automated fingerprint based attendance system has replaced
the annoying manual registers in many organizations. Fingerprint attendance
system prevents fraud recording of working hours that employees otherwise used to do
with manual paper attendance system. It also keeps track of the holidays requested
via fingerprint attendance machine. However the absence of marking the attendance
makes the employee in tedious task and to avoid this situation a alert system for the
employee who is working for the day is acknowledged with reply when no attendance
marked. This will enhance the existing system with acknowledgement and enable the
employee to avoid the absence of marking attendance on working day.

7. Objectives
The project has three main goals:
• To acknowledge the unmarked attendance,
• To display list of absent employee for the day in the department.
To enhance the existing fingerprint attendance system
8. Introduction
Presently, attendance of faculty in most institutes is taken on paper based attendance
registers. There are various disadvantages to this approach such as data is not
available for analysis because paper based registers are not uploaded to a centralized
system, time taken for data collection reduces the effective working time and
increases fake attendance. Some universities also use wall mounted RFID swipe card
systems. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a wireless technology which uses
electromagnetic waves for communication between RFID reader and RFID tag.
Though better than paper based systems, RFID based systems also have certain
problems such as the system is complex, costly and absent employee card can be
swiped by other employee. Biometric techniques can be used to solve these problems.
Biometric is derived from two Greek roots “bios” meaning life and “metrics”
meaning measurement. Biometric technology identifies a person uniquely based on
his/her characteristics which can be physiological or behavioural. Among the various
biometric techniques, there are nine main biometric techniques which are widely
used. These include fingerprint, face, hand vein, hand geometry, iris, retinal pattern,
voice print, signature, and facial thermograms. Comparison of different biometric
techniques has shown that fingerprint biometric is a reliable, mature and legally
accepted biometric technique. Therefore, Fingerprint based attendance system is used
for identification also for attendance monitoring of employees in organizations.
However unmarked attendance on working day by employee brings absent mark in
system. Therefore to avoid this acknowledge adds comfort and relief to employee and
displaying the list of absent employee will adds extra information to the departmental
work.
9. Definition of the Problems
• Absence of marking the attendance bring one day leave even thought the employee is
working for the day .
• Number of employee absent on the day is not displayed to give better option for others.
• Repeated manual computation by the attendance administrator on missing attendance.
10. Review of status of Research and Development in the subject
10.1 National Status
In recent years, biometric authentication has grown in popularity as a means of personal
identification in college administration systems. The prominent biometric methods that
may be used for authentication include fingerprint, palmprint, and handprint, face
recognition, speech recognition, dental and eye biometrics. In this project, a
microcontroller based prototype of attendance system using fingerprint sensor and
module is implemented. The tracking module is used here to identify and acknowledge
the missing attendance
Government Organizations are operating across different locations. The major challenge
is to enable and manage the attendance of the Government workforce across various
locations keeping the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) low. Presently, various
Government Organizations have deployed proprietary biometric attendance solutions,
which lack uniformity in technical architecture due to which these solutions are difficult
to scale up and integrate with each other. Aadhaar based biometric Authentication for the
purpose of attendance would ensure that the attendance of all the Government employees
will be visible in real time on the common attendance portal ensuring transparency and
accountability to bring efficiency. AEBAS is an Online System where authentication of
finger prints is done online, thus presence of Internet Connectivity is mandatory
requirement wherever devices are installed. Internet Connectivity from all service
providers is supported in AEBAS.
11. Novelty Importance of the proposed project in the context of current status
