“The limits of my language mean the kimits of my world”, that’s what the

philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein said on his book. Language is important for us to

communicate and to understand each other. You can only communicate to the people
who can understand the language you are using, that’s why at school they’re teaching
us to speak in English so we can be globally competitive. But after hearing the song
entitled “Speak in English Zone” by Joel Costa Malabanan, he stated that we’re just
keeping ourselves being slaved by foreigners. Is it really helpful for us to learn foreign
language or do we only make it more easier to let the cultures of others reign?

English is the universal language which means most of the people in the world
using this language to communicate with people that has different language from them.
It is true that we are being colonized by foreigners that’s why they really influenced our
culture. Based on Mr. Malabanan on his song the Thomasites or the group of American
teachers are teaching the Filipinos in English way back 1901. According to him, it really
influenced us on our cultural choices like on popular cultures we tend to choose others
than our own products, music etc.. But he also said that because of it, little by little we
embraced the globalization. Because of it, our country produced more globally
competitive workers to be exported on other country to make our economy grow. To
keep up with the globalization we need to do this things like learning foreign language or
export our workers.

But even though it is necessary to do this kind of things, we should not forget our
own language and our own culture. Let’s strive for our country’s sake not for others.
Let’s serve to our motherland and never forget the place where you came from. As a
Filipino even we’re doing this we still need to arouse being nationalistic. Keeping up with
globalization shouldn’t stop us from loving our country, keeping up with globalization
should make us more patriotic to our motherland, the Philippines.
