Counting Lesson Plan

Katelyn Miller created a 20 minute math lesson plan for TK/K grade students focusing on counting using 10 frames. The lesson aligns with the standard of pairing number names with objects in order. Students will practice counting by adding erasers to their 10 frames up to given numbers and determining how many are left after adding or removing erasers, introducing addition and subtraction concepts. The teacher will model 10 frame use, students will independently practice counting, and closing questions will reinforce counting directionality.

Concept(s)

Counting using 10 frames

Alignment with Standards
K.4.A When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object
with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.

Objective
Students will utilize the 10 frame manipulatives to improve their counting skills.

Procedure
A. Focus/Motivation (Open) (Time estimate: )

I will model how to use the 10 frames with the erasers and set expectations. Then I will do an
example with the class. I will ask students if they have any questions.

B. Development (Body) (Time estimate: )

Students will then be given a number and will add erasers to their ten frames while counting
up to the given number. This will be repeated a few times with different numbers.

Students will then be asked to add or take away erasers and then see how many they have left
on their ten frame. I will explain this is an introduction to adding and subtracting that will be
done in the future.
C. Closure (Close) (Time estimate: )

Students will clean up their materials and then be asked closing questions.

Where do we start on our ten frame?(top left)

When we go to the next line, where to we start? (left side)
