Should White Lies Be Always Tolerated?

White lies should not always be tolerated according to the author. While white lies may seem harmless, they can create a dependency on lying and make it easier to tell bigger lies. However, the author also acknowledges that in some cases, like not hurting a child's feelings about their art or a mother's feelings about her baby, a white lie may be preferable to telling an unwanted truth. Overall, the essay discusses the complexity of the issue and does not take a definitive stance, noting the author got distracted from their original intent.

Should white lies be always tolerated?

I believe that it’s very hard to see this situation just in black and white. There are
many times when a white lie does more good than harm and that is what makes this
situation hard to classify.

My first answer to this question would be no, white lies shouldn’t always be
tolerated. You may ask yourself why would I say that? It’s true that all of us tell lies
and use them in order to get ourselves out of an uncomfortable situation, but is that
fair? I believe it’s not fair at all to us and to all the people around us to lie just
because we feel embarrassed about something we’ve done. Also, beside the fact of
honesty, I’d say that these small lies create dependency of using them. Some people
do not think anymore when telling a lie. The false excuse is right there, waiting to be
used instead of the truth. This problem can go even further as the more you lie, the
bigger next lie will be. There was a saying, something like he who steals an egg
today will steal an ox tomorrow and I couldn’t agree more. Maybe we do not intend
to lie so much, but we do it out of instinct and that is the point when lies start to
affect our lives.

Thinking from another perspective, a more optimistic one, lying can help us to take
care of the others. For example, it’s really bad to tell a kid that his drawing is quite
ugly after you’ve seen how much that paper means to him or telling a mother that
her baby doesn’t look at all as beautiful as she describes them. These kind of
moments don’t worth to be ruined by some truths that doesn’t even matter. So,
between telling a lie and so making someone happy and telling the truth and this
way hurting someone’s feelings I would definitely choose the first option. Why
telling your mom that her soup is salty when you know that she hasn’t slept for two
nights?

This essay should have been about my opinion in matter of lying but I think that,
somewhere on the way, I got distracted and turned it on something that helps me
create excuses for the lies I tell. Until next time I really have to go back to what really
matters, and that’s my launch 😊)
