Task 3 and task 4 were both about the current pandemic that has shaken the world and its economy.
They were very relevant to the current situation of the world and how they will impact the daily working
in our day-to-day lives. The outbreak of Coronavirus COVID-19 has affected the whole world and its
economy, cause a global recession. The outbreak has brought our world to a standstill with
unprecedented impact in our lives, economies, livelihoods, and has brought about a massive risk of
global recession and massive loss of jobs.
Task 3 dealt with the impact of the Coronavirus on organised retail. Food retailers and grocery shops
had to respond to an unprecedented demand that strains the entire planet. Customers from all ages,
but particularly those over the age of 50, have moved to digital and delivery, leading to a new,
permanent food retail standard. During the lockout, the non-food sector in the stores came to a
standstill, leading to loss of revenue. Some long term impacts that Covid-19 will have on the organised
retail sector is that a lot of people will switch to online shopping, there will be change in the supply
chain, a new class of essential workers was created and a lot of people will refer to social media to get
information about a company, brand or product.
Task 4 was a little more technical than task 3 it was a detailed report about how technology will impact
and assist in maintain social distancing norms. Many states have made various social distancing
measures during the current COVID-19 pandemic such as travel restrictions, border checks, public
closure, and they have mandated their citizens to maintain a distance of 1.5-2 meters from each other
when going outside. However, such assertive and large-scale measures are not easy to execute, for
example, not all public spaces can be closed and people still have to go out for food, healthcare, and
essential jobs. Technology plays a key role in that regard to facilitate social distance measures. Some
technologies which were discussed in the report were Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, artificial intelligence,
computer vision, thermal, ultrasound, inertial sensors and visible light. It also discussed some
shortcoming that might be faced by this technology such as real time scheduling and optimisation,
security and privacy protection and incentive mechanisms to encourage social distancing. This report
covered multiple aspects on how different types of technology could be used to help in assisting in
maintaining social distancing norms. Technology can encourage and coerce people to ensure that they
are following orders that have been mandated by the government. They also discuss some problems in
social distancing and how they can be potentially rectified and addressed.
I think this experience was different than what it usually was for me in terms of report writing or
summary writing. The topic was also something that I found interesting, since it was relevant to the
situation, we are all facing right now, which made me keen on reading about it. I was able to learn how
to write a summary on research papers which included experiments and their analyses. Over the period
of doing all the tasks I was able to better analyse each report given to me and look at them from a
different perspective from the prior one given to me and try to improve the writing quality as the tasks
progressed.
