Helping Verbs Worksheet

Helping verbs help a main verb to name an action or make a statement. There are 23 verbs that
can be used as helping verbs in the English language.

Directions: Read each sentence and choose the correct helping verb.

Example A: I (am / is) happy that I received a good grade in class.


Answer: am

1. I (is / am) taller than you!

2. We (is / are) proud that she graduated on time.

3. He (was / is) excited about finishing the test before the other students.

4. My parents (was / were) going on vacation but they cancelled it.

5. Have you (be / been) able to talk with your parents about the field trip?

6. Can you (been / be) any more excited about the end of school?

7. I (can / shall) already tell you that you will get into trouble.

8. He (have / has) run in the marathon before.

Directions: Write a sentence with each helping verb listed below. Circle the verb phrase.
