Rumpelstiltskin
By Christin Kimsey
The Rumpelstiltskin shawl is based on a traditional knitting motif. It knits up super quick in worsted weight yarn creating a
warm, yet not too heavy fabric. It also lends itself perfectly to using alternative yarn weights and size adjustments. The pattern
contains detailed instructions on how to adjust the pattern for different yarn weights and amounts of yarn.
Yarn
• 3 skeins Malabrigo Rios (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 192 m (210 yds)/100 g (3.53 oz) skein)
• Sample knit in the colourway Frank Ochre, 557 m (609 yds)/290 g used.
• This pattern is also well suited for alternative yarn weights and yardage. Please adjust needle size (see below) and
refer to adjustments in the pattern instructions.
Needles and Notions
• Worsted weight/10-ply: 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles, 100 cm/40” length
• 3 stitch markers
• Suggested needle sizes for alternative yarn weights: DK/8-ply: 4 mm (US 6), Sport/5-ply: 3.5 mm (US 4),
Fingering/4-ply: 3 mm (US 3)
• Tapestry needle to sew in yarn ends

Gauge (Worsted weight /10-ply yarn)
• Garter stitch: 14 sts = 10 cm (4’’)
Pattern Notes
• The shawl is knit flat from the centre of the upper edge.
• Wingspan = 168 cm (66’’); Height = 76 cm (30”)
• The size of the shawl can easily be adjusted by knitting
more repeats of Section C or by adding a shorter or
longer Border. Instructions on how to adjust the pattern
are given in the respective sections.

The following table contains the stitch counts after each Section C. For the original design knit Section C1 to Section C4. If
you wish a bigger shawl, knit additional repeats of Section C. It is advisable to keep track of the yarn used for each section.
To estimate the amount of yarn needed for each following section add the difference between the last two sections to the
last section (for example, C3 = C2 + (C2 - C1)). Keep in mind to save yarn for the Border and Bind-off. The yarn needed for the
Border can be estimated as for each Section C (for example if you knit 4 times Section C, Border = C4 + (C4-C3)).
Section C1 C2 C3 C4 C5 C6 C7 C8 C9 C10 Border
sts 136 180 224 268 312 356 400 444 488 532 + 40

Row 1 (RS): K2, SM, m1l, knit to 1 st before M, m1r, k1, SM, k1, m1l, knit to M, m1r, SM, k2. (+ 4 sts)
Row 2 (WS): K2, SM, knit to M, SM, knit to M, SM, k2.
Repeat Row 1 and Row 2 9 times (a total of 10 times). The border adds 40 stitches to the stitch count. For example, if you
knit C4 (268 sts) you should have 308 sts on your needles after the border. If you knit the border longer or shorter, please
refer to Bind-off for adjustments.

Bind-off
Picot Bind-off:
Step 1: Cast on 2 stitches using the Knitted Cast-on. Insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch as if to knit, wrap the
yarn around and pull through a stitch. Place that stitch on the left-hand needle. Insert the right-hand needle into the new
stitch as if to knit, wrap the yarn and pull through a stitch. Place that stitch onto the left-hand needle.
Step 2: Bind off 5 stitches using the Traditional Bind-off. Knit 2 stitches. Pull the first stitch over the second stitch and off the
needle (= 1st stitch bound off). Knit the next stitch and pull the stitch that was already on the right-hand needle over the new
stitch and off the needle (= 2nd stitch bound off). Continue until 3 more stitches are bound off. Place the stitch from the right-
hand needle back to the left-hand needle and repeat Step 1 and Step 2 until only two stitches are left on the needle.
End: Cast on 2 stitches (Step 1) and bind off 3 stitches (Step 2). Cut the yarn and pull it through the last stitch.
Adjustments for the Picot Bind-off: The bind-off for the original design works for every stitch count that is dividable by 3
after subtracting 2 stitches. For example: (308 sts – 2 sts) / 3 = 102 sts. If your stitch count differs from this rule, the picots
would not be centred on the lower tip of the shawl. The following adjustments will fix this problem:
• If your stitch count is dividable by 3 after subtracting 1 stitch, for example (352 sts – 1 sts) / 3 = 117 sts: Cast off
1 stitch, then follow the instructions for the Picot Bind-off and cast-off 4 stitches instead of 3 stitches in the end.
• If your stitch count is dividable by 3, for example 396 sts/3 = 120 sts: Cast off 2 stitches, then follow the instructions
for the Picot Bind-off and cast-off 5 stitches instead of 3 stitches in the end.
You can also space the picots wider apart along the border. Every picot “sits” above 2 sts of the previous row. For a cohesive
look, one picot should “sit” above the two center stitches of the shawl. Place a removable stitch marker between these two
stitches and continue to place markers evenly spread out along the border. Start to bind off stitches until you reach the first
marker. Remove the marker and place the stitch from the right-hand needle onto the left-hand needle and follow Step 1 of
the Picot Bind-off. In Step 2 bind off stitches until you reach the next marker, remove the marker and place the stitch from
the right-hand needle onto the left-hand needle. Continue in this fashion until you reach the end.
An alternative bind-off that is very well suited for garter stitch is the Icelandic Bind-off. It blends very well into the fabric and
has enough stretch without causing the fabric to flare out. For this bind-off it is advisable to use a needle size bigger than for
the body of the shawl. You can find a great tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6-qqh1toIk
