Creative Brief Stop Motion

The document outlines a stop-motion animation project that will tell the story of a depressed man who discovers climbing. The man is initially hunched over to show his depressed state but sees someone climbing and tries it himself. Though he fails at first, he persists and eventually succeeds in climbing the route, standing upright at the summit to demonstrate his improved mental state. The production aims to demonstrate how exercise can help alleviate symptoms of mental health issues, as supported by the creator's research showing climbing helped others with confidence and overcoming social anxiety. It includes deadlines for the various production stages ending on November 27th.

BBC Three Online ‘Make me think’

Reaching the Summit

Matthew Simpson

Outline of Production:
I plan to use clothes in order to create a stop animation. I want it to have a similar feel to my
short film. I plan to tell a story of someone who is depressed until he discovers climbing.
Although he fails at first, he eventually succeeds in climbing the route. This sense of
achievement helps him to combat his depression.

Order:
At the start the character is hunched, showing his depressed and
anxious state. He then sees someone climbing and goes over to
try it. At first, he fails and resumes his hunched posture.
But when he tries again and succeeds, climbing up out of
frame. In the end he reaches the summit, now standing
more upright. This shows his elation and improved
state of mind. This represents how exercise can be
used as a tool for people with mental health issues.

The production targets the chosen audience by:

(according to research and focus groups)
Demonstrating a way to help alleviate the
symptoms of mental health issues. People said in
my surveys that exercise helped with their self-
confidence, and that they managed to find courage
and overcome social anxiety
