Toadstools & Mushrooms

These folksy toadstools and mushrooms look like something straight out of a fairytale. Once finished they make
for fun novelty keepsakes, or look fabulous when threaded and turned into rustic hanging ornaments.

Materials Abbreviations
Yarn (see Yarn & Hook section) sl st: Slip Stitch
Crochet Hook ch: Chain
Scissors sc: Single Crochet (UK Double Crochet)
Stitch Marker sc dec: Single Crochet Decrease
Darning Needle hdc: Half Double Crochet
Toy Stuffing dc: Double Crochet
From now on, all crochet stitch abbreviations are
written in US terminology.

Yarn & Hook

For the Toadstools you need small amounts of Red and White (or Cream) coloured yarn.
The Mushrooms are made using a Light Beige and Dark Brown yarn.
Make sure to use a smaller hooksize than you normally would use for the type of yarn that you choose. The
stitches need to be tight enough to prevent the stuffing from showing through. We went with a worsted weight
yarn and used a 2.5mm crochet hook, which is a lot smaller than suggested for that weight of yarn.

Tips & Tricks

In both patterns you’ll find “sc dec” (single crochet decrease) stitches. To make these decreases as neat and
invisible as possible, we’d suggest you use the “Invisible Decrease”. To learn how to make this stitch, you can
visit our website http://www.boysandbunting.com and click on our Crochet Library. You’ll find the video tutorial
under the “Intermediate Stitches” category.
Below we’ll give you a written version of the Invisible Decrease as well.

Enter your hook underneath the front loop only of the next stitch. Do not pull your working yarn through.
Enter your hook underneath the front loop of the next stitch as well. You now have 3 loops on your hook.
Grab the working yarn with your hook and pull it through the first 2 loops on your hook. You now have 2 loops
on your hook. Grab the working yarn again and pull it through both loops on your hook. That’s it!

Before continuing with our final rounds, we are now
going to add the embroidery and the optional hanging
loop. Pull the loop on your hook really big (so that you
won’t unravel your stitches whilst working on the
embroidery) and remove your hook.

Adding an optional Hanging Loop.
E
Cut a length of 30 cm of Natural Twine (or yarn).
Make a loop and tie multiple knots to secure it. Make
sure the knots are on top of one another, this is to
make sure your loop won’t pull through your stitches.
(Picture E in the background).

Using your crochet hook, enter through the center of

your toadstool cap (the center hole of the magic loop)
(Picture E) and pull your twine loop through.
(Picture F)

Embroidery

Using white / cream coloured yarn.

Thread a darning needle with about 40 cm of yarn.
Embroider little cross stitches on your Toadstool Cap,
making sure to space them out evenly. (Picture G).
Secure your yarn by weaving in the ends on the wrong
side of your work.

Don’t worry about the mess you’re creating on the

inside of the Toadstool Cap. This will all be hidden G
once you’re done!

Joining the Stem with the Cap

Insert your hook back into the loop of the last stitch we
made in Round 7 of the cap piece. Pull the loop tight
around your hook by pulling on the working yarn.

We are now going to be joining the two pieces

together. Before finishing the next round, add H
additional stuffing if necessary.

Round 8: sc into each stitch around making sure to

insert your hook through both loops of the cap and
the stem stitches. (Picture H) (24 sts)
Round 9: sc into each stitch around. (24 sts).

To finish off, skip one stitch and sl st into the next st.
Fasten off (Picture I) and sew in your ends.

Round 2: 2 sc into each stitch around (12 sts)
Round 3: sc in the backloops of the stitches of the
previous round (12 sts)
Round 4 - 6: sc into each stitch around. (12 sts)
Round 7: (everything in this round is worked only into
the backloops of the sts of the previous round). sl st
into backloop of next st. ch 3, dc into same stitch. 2 dc
into each stitch around, sl st into top of ch3. Fasten off
and attach Dark Brown yarn. (24 sts) B
In the next round we’re going to make some ‘spike’
stitches. This means we’re going to single crochet into
stitches that are a round lower than we
would normally crochet into. In Round 7 we’ve made
groups of 2 double crochets worked into the
backloops of the round before that (Picture A). The
spike stitches in the next round are going to be made
in those same backloops where the 2 double crochets
were worked into. Your hook should enter in the space
at the base of the 2 double crochets (Picture B). Pull
the working yarn through and pull it up to the
level of the previous stitch so that your work doesn’t C
start to pull. Finish your single crochet as usual.
(Picture C).

To help you out a little: in the next round you will

alternate normal single crochets with ‘spike’ single
crochets. Round 7 consisted of groups of 2 double
crochets. You can see these groups clearly because
they form a V shape at the base.
The normal single crochet will always go into the first
one of those 2 double crochets. The spike single cro-
chet will cover the 2nd one of those double crochets.
When making the next sc after that, ignore the double
crochet that is covered by the spike sc.
D

Round 8: ch 1, sc into same st. Spike SC into base of

dc of Round 7. * sc into the next st. Spike sc into next
st. *
Repeat between * and * 10 more times. Sl st into first
sc of this round. Fasten off. (24 sts) (Picture D)
Sew in ends and stuff the stem with stuffing.
You’ve now created the “gills” of your mushroom.

We are now going to join the Cap with the Stem. Be- G
fore finishing the next round, make sure to stuff your
Mushroom (Picture G). Don’t overstuff since we need
the “gills” part to lie flat.

Round 11: sc into each stitch around making sure to

pass through both loops of both the Cap and the
Stem stitches (Picture F). Skip one stitch and sl st into
the next st and fasten off.

Sew in your ends and you’re done!

Shape the mushroom with your hands by pushing in

the “gills part” to make it sit inside the mushroom cap.
