History of The Philippines

The history of the Philippines is believed to have begun with the arrival of the first humans over 709,000 years ago. Early groups included Negrito people who were the first inhabitants, followed by groups of Austronesians. These social groups eventually developed into various settlements or polities with varying degrees of economic specialization, social stratification, and political organization. The first recorded visit by Europeans was Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, starting the period of Spanish colonial rule that introduced Christianity and the oldest modern university in Asia to the Philippines.
