   - Some basic listening skills
3. Essential Question: How can we make sure our writing makes sense?
4. Materials and Equipment:
   - Computer: The teacher and students will need a computer in order to view a nonfiction
     paragraph.
   - Nonfiction paragraph PowerPoint slide (Google slides): The students will examine a
nonfiction paragraph provided in Nearpod in order to identify and correct errors in
     capitalization, usage, punctuation, and spelling.
5. Instructional Objective: After reading a nonfiction paragraph, students will be able to
identify and correct a total of 10 errors in capitalization, usage, punctuation, and spelling
   using the CUPS strategy.
6. Instructional Procedures:
   - Before: The teacher will tell the students they are going to complete their daily CUPS
activity, which stands for capitalization, usage, punctuation, and spelling.
   - The teacher will drop the Nearpod link in the chat and share her screen in order to show
the students the code to log in.
   - The teacher will tell the students, “Please put your thumb up when you are logged into
       Nearpod.”
   - Once everyone has their thumb up, the teacher will read the objective and the nonfiction
paragraph to the students. Then, the teacher will read the paragraph one more time and
emphasize to the students that it is important to read the text twice in order to understand
what it says. The following is the paragraph the students will correct:
Mount rushmore is lokated in south Dakota. It’s a giant sculpture of american
presidents carving in the side of a mountain? The sculpturee were created buy
gutzon Borglum. The sculpture began in 1927 and ennded in 1941 The sculpture
           represents 150 years of history.
- The teacher will tell the students they have three minutes to make corrections to the
paragraph (The teacher will provide them the exact time they should be finished so they
know what pace to work at). A timer has also been set on their Nearpod activity. Each
student will complete and submit their edit on Nearpod before going over it as a class.
- During: The teacher will ask the students if they see any mistakes in capitalization. The
following are the mistakes in capitalization:
        - Error: rushmore/Correction: Rushmore
               - The teacher will ask the students, “Why should the ‘R’ be capitalized?”
               - The teacher will remind the students that the name of a specific memorial,
such as Mount Rushmore, should always be capitalized because it is a
                   proper noun.
        - Error: south/Correction: South
               - The teacher will ask the students, “Why should the ‘S’ be capitalized?”
               - The teacher will remind the students that the name of a state is a place, so
                   it must be capitalized.
        - Error: american/Correction: American
               - The teacher will ask the students, “Why should the ‘A’ be capitalized?”
               - The teacher will remind the students that American is a proper noun
because it is a person’s nationality, so it must be capitalized.
        - Error: gutzon/Correction: Gutzon
               - The teacher will ask the students, “Why should the ‘G’ be capitalized?”
               - The teacher will remind the students that a person’s first name should
                   always be capitalized.
- Then, the teacher will ask the students if they see any mistakes in usage. The following
    are the mistakes in usage:
        - Error: carving/Correction: carved
               - The teacher will ask the students, “What is wrong with carving?”
               - The teacher will remind the students that when you are writing about an
event that happened in the past, you need to use an ‘ed’ ending.
        - Error: were/Correction: was
               - The teacher will ask the students, “Why should it be ‘was’ instead of
                   were?”
               - The teacher will remind the students that ‘was’ is singular and ‘were’ is
plural. In this sentence, we must use ‘was’ because we are only talking
                   about one sculpture.
        - Error: buy/Correction: by
                    - The teacher will ask the students, “Why should we use ‘by’ instead of
                        buy?”
                    - The teacher will remind the students that buy is used when you purchase
                        something from the store.
    - After, the teacher will ask the students if they see any mistakes in punctuation. The
following are the mistakes in punctuation:
            - Error: mountain?/Correction: mountain.
                   - The teacher will ask the students, “Why should the sentence end in a
                       period?”
                   - The teacher will remind the students that a period should be used when you
                       are writing a telling sentence.
            - Error: 1941/Correction: 1941.
                   - The teacher will ask the students, “Why should the sentence end in a
                       period?”
                   - The teacher will remind the students that every sentence needs to have an
ending punctuation mark. In this sentence, a period should be used.
    - Lastly, the teacher will ask the students if they see any mistakes in spelling. The
following are the mistakes in spelling:
            - Error: lokated/Correction: located
                   - The teacher will ask the students, “How should ‘located’ be spelled?”
            - Error: sculpturee/Correction: sculpture
                   - The teacher will ask the students, “How should ‘sculpture’ be spelled?”
            - Error: ennded/Correction: ended
                   - The teacher will ask the students, “How should ‘ended’ be spelled?”
    - The teacher will highlight each mistake and write each correction on the Google slide.
She will also tally each mistake under its corresponding category.
    - After: The teacher will read the paragraph in order to make sure all of the necessary
        corrections were made.
    - The teacher will remind the students that it is important to use the CUPS strategy while
they are writing, no matter if it is a word, sentence, or paragraph.
7. Assessment: The teacher will know if all students have met the instructional objective
through their participation in the activity. Their participation will be evident during our class
discussion and the work they submit in Nearpod. In addition, I will observe the answers they
   provide, along with their explanation.
8. Differentiated Instruction: F.M., R.C., and S.F. will have the opportunity to write the main
idea of the paragraph. They will make sure to use proper capitalization, usage, punctuation,
and spelling while writing. These students will know they have this opportunity because I will
write it in the chat. They will be able to share their sentence on the Nearpod slide under their
corrections.
